Day 5: Fes - Ifrane - Azrou - Beni Mellal
Breakfast. This is your last day of the tour to the imperial cities. We head to Ifrane, the "little Switzerland" of Morocco through the beautiful “Middle Atlas Mountains”, covered in forests of oak, cork and giant cedar. The dark brown tents of nomadic Berber encampments immediately establish a cultural shift away from the European north; the plateau are pockmarked by dark volcanic lakes.
Enjoy a refreshment stop near “Lake Hchlaf” out of the hustle and bustle in Fes Medina. On the way to Beni Mellal, past the forest of Azrou to see the small apes in the wild in their natural habitat. You will have the opportunity to see and interact with the monkeys-of-Gibraltar in the area of Cedar Gouraud. Free time for lunch at Khnifra Town. Arrive to Beni Mellal. Dinner and overnight at Les Belle Terrace hotel 4* (in a Superior Room) or similar hotel.
After breakfast, leave Beni Mellal behind and start your journey to Ouzoud. After 45 minutes you will reach one of the most spectacular sights in Morocco - Ouzoud Waterfalls, located in a plush valley, in a friendly Berber village. The first stop will be at the panoramic viewing point of the three beautiful waterfalls with a series of spectacular wide to narrow plunges that drop 110m into the river below. Trek along the river up to the caves or Gorges of Oued el- Abid or stay close by and enjoy Moroccan specialties and freshly squeezed orange juice at one of the many cafés along the terraces on the path to the falls and natural scenery. Take pictures to capture the beautiful rainbows that often appear near the bottom of the falls. Continue to Marrakech and check in to the Opera Plaza Hotel.
At 15h30, meet your local guide at the reception and head for a walking tour of the souks and medina of Marrakech. Experience the hustle and bustle of life in Marrakech during this walking tour of the city. Explore the labyrinth of narrow alleyways making up the colourful and bustling souks of Marrakech.
Experience the aroma of the herbs and spices; see the copper and bronze artists at work, visit the forged ironmongers, and pottery souk. Head to the Berber apothecary for a display of magic potions, spices and a refreshing mint tea, the traditional baker’s oven, and finally visit the dyers souk.
Finish your visit of the souks at the Djemâa el Fna Square (the ‘Square of the Extinct’). As the sun sets over Koutoubia, the Marrakchis come out to sell their wares, from fruit to alarm clocks, snake charmers and water sellers, fortune tellers and public scribes, tumblers and dentists, soothsayers and magicians, all to the African beat of the Gnaoua musicians. Dinner and overnight at Opera Plaza 4* (in a Superior Room)
See amazing Palaces and Monuments on a morning tour of Marrakech which includes the sweet smelling gardens of Bahia Palace, Koutoubia Tower and the recently discovered Saadian Tombs. See the famous Koutoubia Tower, the largest mosque in Marrakech with a 70-meter-high minaret. The tower is a great example of Hispano-Moorish art.
Continue to the El Bahia Palace which is surrounded by beautiful gardens filled with fruit trees and sweet smelling flowers. Built in the 19th century, the palace was intended to be the greatest palace of its time.
Head to the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech is one of the most visited sites in Morocco. It took French painter Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962) forty years of passion and dedication to create this enchanting garden in the heart of the “Ochre City”. Renovated by the famous French couturier Yves St Laurent – whose shrine pays hommage. Amble along shady pathways, in the midst of trees and exotic plants of dreamy origin; and walk past refreshing, burbling streams and pools filled with water lilies and lotus flowers. You stop here, and the path turns unexpectedly, revealing a building with Moorish charm, with a hint of Art Deco, painted in astonishingly vibrant electric ‘Majorelle Blue’ colour.
Lunch at a local restaurant in the medina of Marrakech. Return to the hotel and afternoon at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Opera Plaza 4* (in a Superior Room).
Day 8: Departure
