Your Destinations —
This city, in southern Morocco, has been said to symbolise the country as a whole. As a vibrant and colourful centre for culture and entertainment, Marrakech is renowned for its wonderful climate, arts, gardens, ornate palaces, bustling souks (markets), and lively festivals. For those in search of the 'real' Morocco, this is the place to come. Nestling at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains, within ancient city walls, surrounded by look-out towers and ramparts, Marrakech comprises a densely packed maze of narrow streets and alleyways. Djemaa el-Fna Square lies at the heart of the city, and where the Berber tribespeople come to sell their wares, and storytellers, acrobats, and entertainers attract the crowds.
High Atlas Mountains
Also referred to as the 'Grand Atlases' this famous mountain range offers fantastic limestone river canyons, or wadis and is one of the most beautiful ranges in North Africa. The mountain range stretches approximately 1,600 miles across not only Morocco but also Algeria, and Tunisia. It is so vast that it does the job of separating the coastlines of the Mediterranean and Atlantic oceans from the Sahara Desert in Morocco.
Sahara Desert
Leave behind the madness and city chaos and escape over the rugged atlases into a wilder bit of Morocco - this is the famous dunes of the Sahara Desert. One of the absolute highlights of a trip to Morocco is seeing the vast Saharan sand dunes and camping under the stars. Places like Merzouga and Erg Chegaga are increasingly popular with tourists and as far as solitude is concerned, it still has the upper hand over the rest of the country.

Visit several kasbahs along the way, including Tamnougalte. Then, enjoy free time for lunch in the Agdez Valley. The trip continues through the palm-lined Draa river valley. Arrive in Zagora and visit its surroundings especially the Jewish quarter in Amzerou and the palm groves. Afterwards, you will continue your trip towards the doorway to the Sahara Desert (Mhamid). Along the way, you will stop in the the original town of the 16th century dynasty ( Saadian), Tamgroute to visit subterranean local kasbah. A fat, red sun, only underlines the beige tones of the mud and straws mixture and through the covered passages and stone walls, the past filters itself into the present. Ksar Ait Benhaddou has been used as a backdrop for many Hollywood blockbusters. It was one of the most important fortress strongholds on the old Salt Road caravan routes, where traders brought slaves, gold, ivory and salt from sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakech and beyond. Then enjoy dinner at the hotel.

After a late breakfast, you will head to the Ounila Valley until you find yourself on the ancient route caravans used to bring many sought- after goods along to the court of the Sultan. You will soon reach Telouet to visit the pasha's palace, which dominates the village, a fortified citadel that is both a microcosm of an empire and its demise. He had managed to overshadow the sultan by controlling most of nowadays Morocco and decided to erect a palace in the middle of nowhere, where his family had originated from. He had employed the most skilled artisans to build and decorate his main residence and, in its golden age, armies, stables and Christian slaves were confined within its walls while a flourishing Jewish community managed the nearby salt mines. You will then start your way back crossing the High Atlas, this time on the national road, once a camel track that was turned into a proper road suitable for vehicles in the 1930's with the help of the French Foreign Legion. The end of the tour makes its way past abrupt valleys and mountain peaks to descend onto Marrakech later in the afternoon. Lunch is included in the restaurant Chez Ahmed in Telouet.
