Less crowded than some of the island’s other coastal areas, it offers a peaceful escape for those seeking relaxation and natural beauty, making it an ideal retreat for couples, families, and anyone looking to unwind.
Must-sees:
- The expansive beaches of Belle Mare, perfect for a morning walk or a relaxing swim in the crystal-clear waters.
- Belle Mare Plage, a luxury resort offering exceptional beachfront views and access to pristine coral reefs.
- The nearby Flacq Market, a vibrant, bustling market where locals sell fresh produce, spices, and handmade crafts, providing a glimpse into the island’s cultural life.
Culinary culture:
Belle Mare's culinary scene blends traditional Mauritian flavours with fresh seafood and local produce. The area is home to a variety of dining options, from beachside eateries offering fresh fish and grilled prawns to fine dining at upscale resorts. Local specialities like chilli fish and fish vindaye reflect the island’s Creole heritage, while rum-based cocktails provide a refreshing complement to the coastal surroundings.
Dive deeper:
While the beaches are the primary allure, Belle Mare is also a hub for water sports. The surrounding lagoons offer excellent conditions for snorkelling, diving, and sailing. For those looking for a cultural experience, a short drive inland leads to the historic Eglise Sainte-Anne, a colonial-era church with charming architectural details. You can also visit the nearby Mauritius Aquarium for a closer look at the island’s rich marine life.
Good to know:
Belle Mare enjoys a more relaxed pace of life compared to some of the busier areas on the island. The ideal time to visit is between May and December when the weather is pleasant and ideal for outdoor exploration. The area is easily accessible by car, and while most locals speak French, you will also find English widely spoken.
