St Julian's —
St Julian’s, on Malta’s sun-drenched northeast coast, perfectly captures the island’s blend of tradition and modern flair. Once a quiet fishing village, it has evolved into a lively seaside hub where colourful boats bob in the bay beside elegant waterfront promenades, stylish restaurants and vibrant nightlife. It’s the ideal base to enjoy the island’s cosmopolitan energy while staying close to the beauty and history of Malta’s coast.
Must-sees:
- Spinola Bay: The picturesque heart of St Julian’s, lined with brightly painted luzzus (traditional Maltese boats) and charming seafront cafés.
- Balluta Bay: A scenic spot for swimming or enjoying the evening light, framed by Neo-Gothic architecture and palm trees.
- Paceville: Malta’s most famous entertainment district, buzzing with bars, lounges and rooftop terraces.
- Sliema Promenade: Follow the coastal walkway towards Sliema for sea views, shopping and relaxed cafés along the way.
Culinary culture:
St Julian’s is a showcase of Mediterranean flavours with a Maltese twist. Enjoy freshly caught seafood, bragioli (beef olives) or rabbit stew, one of Malta’s national dishes. Local wines and olive oils add an authentic touch, while seaside terraces serve the island’s favourite pastizzi - crisp pastries filled with ricotta or peas. End your evening with a glass of Kinnie, Malta’s bittersweet local soft drink, or a chilled Cisk beer overlooking the bay.
Dive deeper:
Beyond its lively coast, St Julian’s offers easy access to the island’s cultural and natural highlights. Visit Valletta, the UNESCO-listed capital, just 20 minutes away, to explore its baroque palaces and historic bastions. Take a boat trip to the Blue Grotto or Comino’s Blue Lagoon, or unwind with a sunset stroll along the promenade as the sea glows gold and pink. In the evening, St Julian’s transforms into a vibrant social scene - from open-air dining to live music by the water.
Good to know:
Malta International Airport is about 20 minutes from St Julian’s, with taxis and buses running frequently. The best time to visit is from April to October, when the island enjoys sunny skies and warm Mediterranean waters. The local currency is the euro (EUR), and distances across Malta are shor t- you’re never more than 30 minutes from anywhere on the island.
