Your Itinerary In Detail —
Day 1: Amman
Arrive at the Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, where you will be welcomed by our customs representative and assisted in obtaining your visa. Afterwards, you will collect your luggage and meet your driver, who will transfer to your hotel. Overnight stay in Amman.
DAY 2: AMMAN - JERASH - AJLOUN - AMMAN
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Today, you will drive to the ancient city of Jerash or Gerasa, about 45 km from Amman. It is the second-largest site in Jordan after Petra. Jerash is considered one of the best preserved Roman provincial cities in the Near East. It was once hidden under the sand for several centuries before being discovered and restored over a period of 70 years. The city was built entirely of orange-pink limestone, which is enhanced by the sun's rays at dawn and sunset. It is adorned with colonnaded cobbled streets, huge hilltop temples, delightful theatres, spacious public squares, baths, fountains and walls pierced by towers and gates.
Continue on to Ajloun, this city has a very impressive fortress, the Qalaat al Rabad, nestled on top of a mountain, built in the 12th century, at the time of Saladin, to defend the region and control the local iron mines and to prevent the Crusaders from crossing to Jerusalem. From the top, a superb view opens up over the Jordan Valley. In the evening, return to Amman. Overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3: Amman - Road of the Kings - Madaba - Nebo - Shoubak - Petra
Start the day with breakfast at the hotel. Then, drive to the Kings' Road and visit Madaba, also known as the City of Mosaics. You will see the beautiful stone patterns on both churches and houses, crafted by the Byzantines in the 6th century.
Visit to the Church of St. George in Madaba where the "Map of Palestine" was unearthed in 1898 during the construction of the church. This mosaic from the middle of the 6th century, barely altered, traces the geography of the Byzantine Near East. It originally measured 25 m by 5 m and was made up of two million tesserae.
Continuing on, drive to Mt. Nebo located 10 km northwest of Madaba. Presumed to be the site of the tomb of Moses, Mount Nebo rises to 840 m above sea level. It became a place of universal pilgrimage from the beginning of the Christian era. You will continue on to the fortress of shoubak. This impressive Crusader castle was built by Baldwin I of Jerusalem in 1115 and was originally called "Krak de Montreal" or "Mons Regalis" in honour of the king's contribution to its construction (Mount Royal). At its peak, about 6,000 people lived in the castle. It was attacked several times by Saladin and finally fell to him in 1189 after a two-year siege. The Mamluks then restored the castle in the 14th century.
Overnight stay in Petra.
DAY 4: PETRA THE ROSE
Have breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy a full day tour of Petra. The pink city, "Petra" (Greek for stone), derives from the Aramaic toponym pronounced "Rekem" or "Rakmou", which means "two-coloured". Geology is indeed at the origin of the red city, entirely carved in a soft sandstone. Man, who has been present here for about ten thousand years, completed the appearance of the site between the 3rd century BC and the 2nd century AD.
In total, nearly 800 monuments, mostly tombs, are scattered over 100 km2 of Petra. The eighth wonder of the world and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it is the most famous site in Jordan and even the Middle East.
On this day, you will cross the Siq, a narrow and long fault line caused by a prehistoric earthquake. At the end of the Siq, the most majestic monument of Petra suddenly appears, "Al Khazneh" or the "Treasure" with its Greco-Roman decoration. It is true dazzling spectacle of beauty!
See the hundreds of sculpted buildings, temples, royal tombs, houses, burial chambers, festival halls, baths, monumental staircases, arched doorways, cobbled streets and above all the Roman theatre with about 3000 seats. You will cross the Roman cardo and visit the Qasr El Bint, the only temple still standing and in a good state of preservation.
In the afternoon, climb to Mount El Deir or the Monastery (optional), and roam the area at your own leisure.
Return to the hotel. Have dinner and stay overnight at the hotel in Petra.
Day 5: Petra - Little Petra - Wadi Rum
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Then, depart to "Little Petra", taking the desert road of Wadi Rum.
Wadi Rum is said to be vast, echoing and marked by the presence of the divine. Its landscape is breathtaking with dramatic cliffs, peaks and valleys and was the site of the Great Arab Revolt, magnified by the director David Lean in one of the most impressive scenes of his "Lawrence of Arabia".
Go on a safari in the desert in a "local" 4X4 pick-up for 3 hours to discover the sandy plains and the strange rock formations with ochre tints eroded by the wind and the sand. Stop to admire the sunset over the desert. Settle into your traditional Bedouin camp.
Dinner and overnight stay in Bedouin tents.
DAY 6: WADI RUM 6 THE DEAD SEA
After breakfast, continue to the Dead Sea which is surrounded by mountains to the east and the rolling hills of Jerusalem to the west, giving it an almost unreal beauty. The therapeutic benefits of the Dead Sea have been known for at least two thousand years. The climate and elements (sun, water, mud and air) have been proven to provide a unique combination of natural conditions capable of alleviating a range of chronic conditions and skin problems. You will have free time to swim and "float" on the surface of the waters. The buoyancy is due to the salt content being nine times that of ordinary seawater.
Dinner and overnight stay near the Dead Sea.
Day 7: The Dead Sea - Amman
Have breakfast at the hotel. Return to Amman for a visit of the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom. Between the desert and the Jordan Valley, Amman is home to more than a million inhabitants. Built entirely of beige white limestone, the city is an aggregate of cream-coloured cubes, gilded by the sun. From the top of the citadel, don't miss the superb view of the lower city. But before going down there, a visit to the archaeological museum, the temple of Hercules and the Umayyad palace is a must. Then a short walk in the lower city, which has preserved a beautiful Greco-Roman theatre, which can accommodate about six thousand spectators.
Overnight stay at the hotel in Amman.
DAY 8: DEPARTURE FROM AMMAN AIRPORT
Wake up and enjoy breakfast at the hotel. You will be transferred to the Amman Airport for your departure.
