Though under an hour from Venice, Padua seems a world away with its medieval marketplaces, Fascist-era facades and hip student population. As a medieval city-state and home to Italy’s second-oldest university, Padua challenged both Venice and Verona for regional hegemony. A series of extraordinary fresco cycles recalls this golden age – including in Giotto’s remarkable Cappella degli Scrovegni, Menabuoi’s heavenly gathering in the Baptistry and Titian’s St Anthony in the Scoletta del Santo. For the next few centuries Padua and Verona challenged each other for dominance over the Veneto plains. But Venice finally settled the matter by occupying Padua permanently in 1405.
Southwest of Padua, admire the Euganean Hills. Explore the walled hilltop towns, misty vineyards and bubbling hot springs. Just south of Padua lie the natural-hot-spring resorts of Abano Terme and Montegrotto Terme. They have been active since Roman times, when the Patavini built their villas on Mt Montirone.

The Grand Hotel Terme has two restaurants, one located on the ground floor near the pool, and the other on the sixth floor of the hotel - offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Breakfast and lunch are served in the poolside restaurant, which is transformed from a luminous “winter garden” during the colder months, and into an “al fresco” dining experience from Spring to early Autumn.
In the evening, dinner is served in the elegant panoramic restaurant on the hotel’s top floor, unique amongst the region’s hotels. Soft music, impeccable service and a magnificent view of the hills surrounding Montegrotto create a 5* experience. With an emphasis on light and flavoursome foods, organic meat sourced locally from the Euganean hills and fresh fish bought from the market at Chioggia.
