Your Destination —
Catania is the second largest city in Sicily, framed by the Etna volcano to the west, and the Mediterranean to the east. It is a vibrant city with bars, cafés, and narrow, winding alleys.
Catania is the perfect location for a visit that will lead you around the entire island of Sicily. The city is an ideal base for daytrips to the legendary Toarmina, Mt. Etna, the charming towns of Siracusa and Enna, as well as the Roman Villas of Casale. Not far from your perfect abode at Romano Palace, you can go hiking, sailing, take helicopter rides and anything else you might desire to make your time in Sicily truly unforgettable!
Things to see and do..(to name a few!):
Street Markets
Catania's great markets are street theatre at its most thrilling. The best show in town is the raucous fish market, La Pescheria , which takes over the streets behind Piazza del Duomo every workday morning.
Piazza del Duomo
A Unesco World Heritage Site, Catania's central square is a set piece of sinuous buildings and a grand cathedral, all built in the unique local baroque style, with its contrasting lava and limestone. In the centre of the piazza is Catania's most memorable monument, and a symbol of the city, the smiling Fontana dell'Elefante (built in 1736).
Via Etna
Lined with modern department stores, bars and pavement cafes, It's not difficult to see how Catania's main shopping street got its name – on a clear day you can see Mt Etna rising menacingly at the end of it. Via Etnea runs straight from Piazza del Duomo up to the foothills below Etna.
Le Ciminiere
Catania's answer to London's Tate Modern, Le Ciminiere is a modern museum complex housed in a converted sulphur refinery. There are two museums and two permanent exhibitions, one dedicated to old radios and the other displaying a fascinating collection of historic maps, as well as a cafe-restaurant and performance spaces.
With so much to see and do in the area, all you have to think about is cramming it all in!
