Welcome to Italy

Set off on a timeless journey through the heart of Puglia, where the freedom of a self-drive itinerary shapes every moment. This route connects two distinctive stays: the Jonium Hotel 4*, a contemporary coastal retreat overlooking the Ionian Sea, and the Corte di Bonifacio 4*, a historic stone residence set within the atmospheric streets of Gallipoli.

Each mile through the Salento reveals a shifting landscape of light and texture, from sun-drenched olive groves and vineyard roads to a coastline where the sea takes on near-unreal clarity. Along the way, the journey unfolds through simple yet memorable moments, including a wine tasting among the vines, a slow catamaran sail across the Ionian, and long open horizons where land and sea meet in quiet balance. It is a region best experienced unhurried, where Southern Italy reveals itself gradually and with ease.

Our offers:

  • 4 nights: 2 nights at Jonium Hotel 4* + 2 nights at Corte di Bonifacio Hotel 4*
  • 5 nights: 3 nights at Jonium Hotel 4* + 2 nights at Corte di Bonifacio Hotel 4*
  • 7 nights: 4 nights at Jonium Hotel 4* + 3 nights at Corte di Bonifacio Hotel 4*
  • 9 nights: 5 nights at Jonium Hotel 4* + 4 nights at Corte di Bonifacio Hotel 4*
  • 14 nights: 7 nights at Jonium Hotel 4* + 7 nights at Corte di Bonifacio Hotel 4*

Your suggested itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival, car pick-up and the Ionian coast at Pulsano
Collect your car at Brindisi Airport (BDS) or Bari Airport (BRI) and drive towards the Ionian coast. After around 50 miles, arrive in Pulsano, where the sea immediately sets the tone for the journey with shallow, crystal-clear waters shifting between turquoise and emerald green. Check in at Hotel Jonium, your base for the next four nights, set right by the water. The rest of the day is at leisure, whether for a first swim, time by the pool or simply easing into the coastal rhythm. In the evening, enjoy dinner by the sea with local specialities such as Ionian mussels, tiella with rice, potatoes and mussels, orecchiette with slow-cooked meat sauce, and crisp taralli with fennel seeds. Did you know? The exceptional clarity of the water comes from fine sandy seabeds and the absence of river inflow, allowing sunlight to reach the sea floor and create its distinctive Caribbean-like tones.

Day 2: Alberobello and the Itria Valley
Travel inland for a full-day excursion to Alberobello, around 50 miles from Pulsano, one of Puglia’s most iconic sights and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through the Monti and Aia Piccola districts, where the trulli create an almost surreal landscape of whitewashed stone houses with conical roofs. The atmosphere feels suspended in time as everyday life continues within these historic dwellings. On the return journey, pass through the Itria Valley, where rolling countryside, ancient olive groves and whitewashed villages such as Locorotondo and Cisternino sit quietly above the landscape. Did you know? The trulli were originally built without mortar so they could be dismantled quickly to avoid taxation on permanent structures.

Day 3: Massafra and the Ionian beaches
Head to Massafra, a striking town shaped by a deep ravine that cuts through its centre and reveals rock-cut churches and ancient hermitages carved into limestone. It is a quieter, more atmospheric side of Puglia, where history feels embedded in the landscape itself. In the afternoon, return towards the coast and continue to San Pietro in Bevagna, where long sandy beaches and clear, shallow waters offer a slower pace and time to unwind. Did you know? The gravines of this region contain one of the highest concentrations of rock churches in Europe, many dating back over a thousand years.

Day 4: Grottaglie, Oria and wine tasting experience
Begin the day in Grottaglie, the ceramic capital of Puglia, where artisan workshops are carved directly into the rock and tradition is still very much alive. Continue to Oria, a hilltop town dominated by its Swabian castle and narrow medieval streets. Later in the day, enjoy an included wine tasting experience among the vineyards, sampling regional varieties such as Primitivo and Negroamaro, paired with local specialities. Did you know? Grottaglie sits above a natural ravine that runs beneath the old town, shaping both its geography and history.

Day 5: Transfer to the deep Salento – Gallipoli and Casarano
Leave the Ionian coast and travel south through the Salento. Stop in Gallipoli, a vibrant seaside town set on a small island connected to the mainland, before continuing to Casarano. Check in at Corte di Bonifacio, a historic stone residence where time feels slower and more grounded. The afternoon is free to relax or explore the surrounding streets at an easy pace.

Day 6: Catamaran experience included
A full day at sea aboard a catamaran along the southern Salento coast. Sail towards Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Adriatic meets the Ionian Sea, passing sea caves, limestone cliffs and hidden coves along the way. Stop for swimming and snorkelling in clear, quiet waters far from the shore. Did you know? According to legend, Saint Peter landed in Leuca during his journey to Rome, giving the area its long-standing symbolic significance.

Day 7: Lecce and final evening in Salento
Travel to Lecce, known as the Florence of the South, celebrated for its golden Baroque architecture carved from soft limestone. Explore the Basilica di Santa Croce, Piazza del Duomo and the Roman amphitheatre at the heart of the city. Take time for a relaxed lunch and an iced almond coffee before returning to Casarano for your final evening in Salento. Did you know? Lecce’s papier-mâché tradition began in the 17th century as an accessible alternative to marble sculpture and developed into a recognised art form.

Day 8: Departure
Drive back to Brindisi Airport (BDS) or Bari Airport (BRI) and return your car before departure.

Your destination

Puglia

Welcome to Puglia, Italy's sun-drenched southern gem, where ancient history, stunning coastlines, and culinary delights converge. Located in the heel of Italy's boot, Puglia offers travelers an authentic Italian experience away from the bustling crowds.

Must-sees:

  • Lecce: Often dubbed the "Florence of the South," Lecce is renowned for its Baroque architecture, with ornate churches and palaces lining its historic streets.
  • Alberobello: This UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for its "trulli" – whitewashed stone huts with conical roofs, offering a glimpse into traditional Apulian life.
  • Castel del Monte: A 13th-century castle with a unique octagonal design, reflecting a blend of cultural influences and offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Culinary culture:

Puglia's cuisine is a celebration of simplicity and local produce. The region is a significant producer of olive oil and wine, with more wine production than any other Italian region. Traditional dishes include orecchiette pasta, often served with turnip tops or rich tomato sauces, and "puccia," a sandwich made with pizza dough. Seafood lovers will delight in the fresh catches from the Adriatic and Ionian seas, featured prominently in local menus.

Dive deeper:

Beyond its well-known attractions, Puglia offers numerous medieval towns such as Polignano a Mare and Martina Franca, each with its own unique charm. The region boasts two national parks, offering opportunities for hiking and biking amidst diverse landscapes. For a unique experience, consider staying in a traditional "masseria," a restored farmhouse that immerses you in the region's rustic charm.

Good to know:

Puglia enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The best times to visit are spring and autumn, when the weather is pleasant, and the crowds are thinner. Traveling by car is recommended to fully experience Puglia's offerings, as it allows access to its many hidden gems.

The region is well-connected, with airports in Bari and Brindisi offering flights to various destinations. While Italian is the official language, English is commonly understood in tourist areas.
