Welcome to Italy —
Milan
Famed for its designer shops and grand architecture, Milan is the perfect place for a stylish city break. The birthplace of famed fashion houses including Gucci, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana, in Milan, you can experience this glamorous atmosphere at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a grand shopping mall that boasts a beautiful glass-domed roof.
Housing some of the oldest shops and restaurants in the city, stop off for an Italian pastry at Biffi Caffè restaurant and an authentic Negroni at Camparino bar. Step out of the glamorous gallery and into the Piazza del Duomo, which is overshadowed by the massive Gothic facade of the Milan Cathedral, which took nearly six centuries to complete. Nearby, the Royal Palace of Milan houses a collection of fine art, and the San Bernadino alle Ossa chapel is a unique sight - the elegant walls hold thousands of bones! At the end of the day, make sure to try some of the varied cuisine in this lively city, including cosy trattorias and Michelin-starred restaurants.
Genova
With the nation's largest trade port and notable historic landmarks, Genoa is a bustling coastal city showcasing Italy's flamboyant past and innovative present. As a popular gateway to the Italian Riviera, Genoa is often overlooked by tourists who seek to explore Italy’s more famous attractions.
With a distinct local culture, brilliant shops, and fabulous gourmet cuisine, this unique city is certainly worth visiting. When it comes to things to do, visitors should take time to explore Pallazi dei Rolli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to a collection of stunning palaces and Baroque architecture. For fascinating artwork, head to the Palazzo Rosso gallery, or, simply relax with a cup of Italian coffee and watch the world go by.
Cinque Terre
Nestled along the Italian Riviera, Cinque Terre is a gorgeous region comprised of five colourful cliffside villages that are surrounded by dramatic hills and vineyards. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 15 km stretch of coastline is well known for its incredible hiking trails, picture-perfect views, and quaint village atmosphere, and makes for a memorable Italian coastal break!
The area’s five main villages all offer something different for visitors, and if you have the time, it’s worth visiting them all - the dedicated Cinque Terre train from La Spezia runs once an hour, and makes stops at them all. Riomaggiore, the first stop on the line, is the largest, with a clifftop medieval castle; the next stop, Manarola, is the place to try the Cinque Terre’s wine, Sciacchetrà, while further down Corniglia is unique in that it does not have direct access to the sea, instead of being perched atop a dramatic cliff. Vernazza has a romantic harbour, and Monterosso offers visitors a charming beach.
Along the coast, sample Pasta alla Genovese, with the region’s delicious pesto, or some traditional focaccia; or, discover some of the equally charming towns along the Ligurian coastline. La Spezia features a spacious port and plenty of charming trattorias, while Levanto is on the very cusp of Cinque Terre, and is the ideal starting point for a long hike along the coast.
Rome
A city with a history spanning 28 centuries, Rome encompasses ancient ruins, Renaissance elegance, and modern style, all in one short trip. In this way, the city is a glorious architectural patchwork - begin at the ancient Roman Forum and Colosseum, before stopping by the Baroque masterpiece of the Trevi Fountain on the way to the glamorous shopping district of Via dei Condotti.
Looking over the city skyline, it’s hard to miss the many church spires - this is a city filled with religious monuments, and none is more conspicuous than the grand St. Peter’s Basilica within the independent state of the Vatican City. Within this tiny city, art-lovers will be thrilled to spend time in the Vatican Museums, housing some of the world’s most important examples of Renaissance art as well as the Sistine Chapel.
Elsewhere in the city, sample some authentic Italian coffee while standing at a bar like a true local, or treat yourself to the city’s best pizza - the Roman speciality of a square pizza offered by the slice can be found on most street corners. To relax and take in the city views, walk up to the Pincio Gardens - the perfect place to see a romantic sunset over Piazza del Popolo and the Vatican.
