Il Geco

The apartments at Il Geco are immersed in the beautiful historical setting of Rione Malve, one of the oldest districts of the Sasso Caveoso. This area is where it's possible to live in the typical rock habitat that gave rise to human life in the rugged rocky territory called Tuff—though your stay will be anything but tough.

 

Cosy rooms with charming furnishings and unique spiral staircases are enchanting as you burrow into the earth for an evening. In this spirit, Il Geco has tried to preserve the style and essence of typical homes, without too many frills. You're sure to find your Matera adventure to be wonderfully authentic.

After entering through your private entrance and descending down the spiral staircase, you'll find your cosy Geco Blu Room. This apartment is built our of tuff blocks and complete with a pointed arch. Sprawl out on the double bed and cook yourself something tasty on the four-burner stove. To top it off, you'll also have a balcony overlooking the historic centre.

Itinerary:

• Departure from Piazza Vittorio Veneto with an introduction to the UNESCO World Heritage city.
• Walking towards the historic heart, you will meet the beautiful church of San Giovanni Battista, in Apulian Romanesque style.
• The tour continues with a visit to the Casa Cava, an underground environment formerly used as a tuff quarry, now used as an auditorium and conference center thanks to an exceptional restoration work.
• You will thus arrive in the Sasso Barisano district, to access the rock church of Sant’Antonio Abate,
• The tour continues in the Sasso Caveoso for a visit to a typically furnished cave house,
• During the journey you will cross Via Madonna delle Virtù, the suggestive road overlooking the canyon, crossing Porta Pistola (in Materano dialect "Pert P'stèl")

What awaits you:

• Guided excursion inside the Murgia Materana Park, also known as the Natural Historic Park of the Rock Churches;
• Walk along the path that will make you discover the peculiarities of the place, among caves carved into the rock
• cultivated areas and typical flora of the Mediterranean maquis;
• The Murgia of Matera is also located in front of the city of Matera, only the Gravina stream divides the two areas, and what opens before your eyes will truly be a unique spectacle.

During the excursion you will visit some rare rock churches:
• Rock crypt of San Falcione, frescoed;
• Rock Church of the Madonna delle Tre Porte with the presence of frescoes of considerable artistic and historical value dating back to between the 12th and 17th centuries

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

As of October 18th 2020, the UK Government has confirmed that Italy has been removed from the safe travel list, therefore 14 days of self-isolation quarantine upon reentering the UK will be mandatory upon return from Sunday 18th October at 4am. Tourists choosing to book stopover flights may not be permitted to return without quarantining if the country they stop off in is not also listed as green/amber by the UK Government. Please note that this information is constantly being reviewed and may be subject to change.

If travellers have visited Croatia, Greece, Malta or Spain within 14 days of their arrival in Italy, they have to present proof of a negative PCR test that's no older than 72 hours OR take a test upon arrival and quarantine in the hotel while waiting for the results. All travellers visiting the island of Sardinia must have the results of a negative PCR test on arrival that's less than 48 hours old. 

The Italian Government requires all travellers from the UK to show they have taken a test within 72 hours of arrival along with a negative result. Those unable to provide evidence will be able to take a test in Italy. If tested positive, you will be required to quarantine.
