Featuring impressive mountains, rolling green hills and overlooking the Ligurian Sea, this beautiful crescent-shaped region of Italy is well worth a visit. Striking the perfect balance between nature, mountains, culture, entertainment and nightlife, visitors here will never be short of great things to see and do.
The region’s unique geography has resulted in a climate and landscape that would generally be expected in the more southerly parts of the country. Palm trees, citrus fruits and olive groves all grow alongside Liguria’s famous flower industry, as well as more common northern bounties like chestnuts.
Liguria is divided into roughly two halves, the western Riviera di Ponente and the eastern Riviera di Levante, with the capital port city of Genoa separating the two. Historically, the Riviera di Ponente was the more popular side, with bustling resort towns like Sanremo dominating. However, writers, artists and tourists alike have now discovered the many merits of the Riviera di Levante such as the pretty pastel-coloured fishing village of Portofino, and the steep, technicolour terraces of Cinque Terre.
