Ischia —
Situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Ischia is the largest island in the Gulf of Naples. Renowned for its thermal springs and lush landscapes, this picturesque island blends natural beauty with centuries of history. Beyond its beaches, Ischia offers a fascinating glimpse into authentic Italian island life with its fishing villages, terraced vineyards, and welcoming locals.
Must-sees:
- Castello Aragonese, a medieval castle perched on a volcanic rock connected by a causeway, offering panoramic views and historic intrigue.
- The La Mortella Gardens, a subtropical garden retreat created by composer William Walton and his wife, showcasing exotic plants and artistic charm.
- Sant’Angelo, a tranquil village with narrow alleys, chic boutiques, and traditional fishing boats bobbing in the harbour.
Culinary culture:
Ischia’s cuisine is rooted in its volcanic soil and maritime surroundings. Dishes like rabbit stew (coniglio all’Ischitana) highlight the island’s pastoral heritage, while freshly caught seafood is a staple. Vineyards thriving on volcanic terrain produce the renowned Biancolella and Forastera wines, perfect accompaniments to local fare. Do not miss the citrusy delights of the island’s famed limoncello.
Dive deeper:
For a more intimate experience, explore Ischia’s thermal parks such as Negombo or Poseidon Gardens, where ancient traditions of hydrotherapy meet contemporary wellness. Venture into the lesser-known Fiaiano Pine Forest for serene hikes or join a vineyard tour to taste the island’s organic wines. The Museo del Mare offers insights into Ischia’s maritime history.
Good to know:
The island’s currency is the Euro, and the best time to visit is spring or early autumn when the weather is mild, and crowds are thinner. Regular ferries connect Ischia to Naples and other islands, and buses provide affordable transport around the island. Pack comfortable shoes to navigate its rugged terrain.
