- Waking to mountain light and the scent of fresh bread drifting from the breakfast room.
- Lingering in the spa until the mountains outside fade into dusk.
- Joining a summer barbecue where the air carries both woodsmoke and alpine breeze.

Dolomites —
The Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site in northern Italy, captivate with their jagged limestone peaks, emerald valleys and storybook alpine villages. Stretching across South Tyrol, Trentino and Veneto, this mountain range blends Italian flair with Tyrolean traditions, offering year-round beauty. Whether blanketed in snow or glowing at sunset in the famed alpenglow, the Dolomites promise landscapes as breathtaking as they are timeless.
Must-sees:
- Tre Cime di Lavaredo: The most iconic trio of peaks in the Dolomites, offering spectacular high-altitude hikes and panoramic views.
- Bolzano: Capital of South Tyrol, where Italian and Austrian cultures meet. Don’t miss the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, home to Ötzi the Iceman.
- Merano: A charming spa town and “flower village” famed for its botanical gardens, thermal baths and Belle Époque atmosphere.
- Marmolada: The highest summit of the Dolomites, known as the “Queen of the Dolomites”, with sweeping glacier views.
- Lago di Braies: A turquoise alpine lake surrounded by steep cliffs and pine forests, perfect for walks or boat rides.
Culinary culture:
The Dolomites’ cuisine reflects both alpine heartiness and Italian finesse. Sample canederli, hearty bread dumplings served in broth or with speck, enjoy mountain cheeses with local wines, or pause in a rustic hut for polenta topped with wild mushrooms. Sweet specialities like apple strudel and kaiserschmarrn add a comforting Tyrolean touch.
Dive deeper:
Discover the Ladin-speaking villages of Val Gardena and Val di Fassa, where folk festivals, woodcarving traditions and age-old legends still shape daily life. Explore quiet chapels with hand-painted frescoes or visit Corvara and San Cassiano for an authentic taste of Ladin culture. In summer, hiking, via ferrata climbing and mountain biking take centre stage, while in winter, world-class ski resorts transform the valleys into a snow-lover’s paradise. For glamour and alpine elegance, head to Cortina d’Ampezzo, a chic resort and former Olympic host city known for its luxury boutiques, stylish cafés and cosmopolitan après-ski.
Good to know:
The Dolomites are best reached from airports in Venice, Verona or Innsbruck, all around two to three hours away by car. Summer brings long, sunny days with mild temperatures rarely above 25°C, perfect for hiking and lake excursions. Winter is ski season, when the Dolomiti Superski area opens up over 1,200 km of pistes. For the best balance of scenery and tranquillity, June, September and early October are ideal times to visit.
