Your Destinations —
Rome has everything you could possibly want from a modern city break holiday, but critically, it's the city's history that acts as the principal magnet. From the remains of its imperial glory days to the Renaissance and baroque riches of its historic centre, Rome is a glorious architectural patchwork - a living masterpiece.
Begin your journey at the Vatican City, declared an independent state in 1929 and home to St. Peter's Basilica (the largest church in the world), the Vatican Museum and the shining star of the Italian Renaissance, the Sistine Chapel. The awe-inspiring architecture and art collection make the Vatican City top of the list of must-sees. While there's no escaping Rome's illustrious past, modern Romans embrace the present. So do as they do and throw yourself into the life of the city.
Straddling the cliffs overlooking the water to Mount Vesuvius and Naples is the beautiful town of Sorrento. It is a town rich in culture, gastronomy, and stunning natural scenery. Sitting in the West of the Amalfi coast and south of Pompeii, this is a fantastic region to explore! Here, the shops, supermarkets, banks and the Correale Museum are all within easy reach, and the Corso Italia with its shops, the Cathedral, the Villa Fazzoletti where cultural events are held and the famous Bougainvillea Ice-cream Parlour and Pizzeria are definite highlights! Wander through the famous ‘Vicoletti’ streets with delightful shops selling, amongst other things, inlaid wood, candles, lemon soaps, sweets, embroidery, glass, ceramics and Limoncello liqueur!
Naples has a long list of cultural treasures to enjoy and makes for a perfect city break. Try a walk around Piazza Garibaldi, a visit to some of the cathedrals, or even shopping in the upscale boutiques around the city. As is the case with any city in Italy, a trip to Naples wouldn’t be complete without some time at an outdoor café, sipping a frothy cappuccino or a strong espresso and watching the city go on with its daily hustle and bustle. Naples may seem like an ancient city on the outside, but this surprising city also has a modern side to it. Chiaia, Naples’s more upmarket neighbourhood, is full of stylish shops and innovative restaurants.
There is plenty to do in the area, and a quick boat ride to Capri will make you feel as if you are worlds away from the lively streets of Naples. Remember that you are also very close to Mount Vesuvius and the fascinating town of Pompeii, both of which are a must for anybody visiting the area.
