Rhodes Town
Semiramis Hotel is located on the west coast of Rhodes town 70m from the sea. The atmospheric Old Town of Rhodes is a maze of cobbled streets that will spirit you back to the days of the Byzantine Empire and beyond. Further south is the picture perfect town of Lindos, a magical vision of sugar-cube houses spilling down to a turquoise bay.
Knights Quarter (1km) - the knights of St John transformed the northern segment of the Old Town into their headquarters (14th & 15th centuries) - erecting mighty fortress-like mansions as well as a fortified palace that still stands today.
Street of the Knights (1km) - home from the 14th century to the Knights Hospitaller who ruled Rhodes, with signs of Italian restoration during 1930s.
Palace of the Grand Master (1.2km) - magnificent building whose facade looks much as it did when initially built in 14th century. Devastated by an explosion in 19th century, however, the interior is an Italian reconstruction - creating an interesting compilation of old and new.
Jewish Synagogue Museum - during the 1920s, Old Town's Jewish Quarter was home to a thriving Jewish community. After a tragic deportation to Auschwitz, it is now a time-forgotten neighbourhood of sleepy streets and dilapidated houses. Photos and documents in the museum tell the whole story.
Hora (48km) - bearing traces of its Ottoman past. During Turkish times, churches were converted to mosques, the most important of which is the colourful pink-domed Mosque of Sleyman. Wind through pedestrian streets to see traces of Turkish legacies.
