Your Destination —
Small it may be but Paxos has all the variety of much larger islands, such as the rugged grandeur of its Adriatic coast, the dappled shade and cool glades of its interior and the beaches and picturesque inlets along its east coast. It is a microcosm of all that is best in a Greek island, but on a scale that means it can be easily explored by car or on foot.
Its reputation as a romantic destination stretches as far back as Roman times: Anthony and Cleopatra apparently chose Paxos for a candlelit dinner a deux before the fateful Battle of Actium in 31BC, setting a precedent that discerning British visitors to the island have been happy to follow in more recent times.
There are only two main villages on the island, Gaios the capital, with its network of narrow streets and harbour sheltered by the picturesque islet of Agios Nikolaos, and quiet Loggos to the north, a fishing village where island life moves at a slower more relaxed pace.
Apart from the olives, the beaches of Paxos have rightly earned the accolades of those who have been fortunate enough to visit them. The choice is wide, from popular stretches of sand where the active can enjoy various water sports and beach side kantinas to hidden small beaches tucked away at the back of tree-lined coves.
But Paxos is far more than just an idyllic holiday destination. Most of its inhabitants have lived and worked on the island for many generations, and tending their olives or vines, fishing along its shores still play a central role in the daily life of the island and the visitor is very much a part of that life. Perhaps therein lies the reason why so many return to this 'paradise' year after year.
Your Hotel —
The interior of Paxos is a maze of quiet lanes winding through the trees, making the island seem much bigger than it actually is. The Paxos Club Hotel, set in lovely mature gardens and surrounded by olive groves feels pleasantly remote. In fact it is barely a kilometre from the main port of Gaios, the dramatic cliffs and headlands of the west coast.
At the heart of this delightful small hotel is an original Paxiot house built out of the sun-bleached limestone rock of the island. It is now used as a restaurant where breakfast can be enjoyed in the morning.
The pool area also has an unusual jacuzzi constructed on a little island, reached by a small bridge. Adjacent and separated from the main pool by this bridge is also a children's paddling pool.
The Paxos Club is perfectly situated for walking. Paths and quiet lanes lead out in all directions and a beach or fabulous picnic spot is never more than a 15 minute stroll away. It is only a 15 minute stroll down into Gaios, with its wide choice of restaurants, shops, tavernas and its bustling harbour.
The hotel also provides a minibus service with a regular timetable to Gaios. For anyone who wants to enjoy all the comforts of a gorgeous hotel, wonderful relaxation and all this beautiful island has to offer, the Paxos Club is the perfect choice.

Gaios is also host to a superb array of restaurants, cafes and gorgeous tavernas where you can sample some excellent Greek cuisine, Paxos specialities and International fare. Try the popular Paxos dish 'Mezdes' - appetisers made from ingredients such as octopus, salad, sardines, calamari or clams, and refresh with an 'Ouzo' - a trypical Greek aperitif.
Your Time —
Anti-Paxos
Just 2 km off the tip of the southern Paxos sits the paradise islet of Anti-Paxos with its aqua-marine waters and picturesque white, sandy beaches of which Caribbean postcards are made.
This stunning islet is small and almost uninhabited; instead of olive groves there are many small vineyards looked after by Paxos families, giving the islet buckets of character. Taste the delicious wine in one of the cute tavernas and find ultimate relaxation on those magnificent beaches. Easily accessible by boat departing from Gaios, the trip only takes 15 minutes and the boats run frequently.
