Halkidiki —
The peninsula of Halkidiki - the birthplace of the philosopher Aristotle - can be found 60 km southeast of Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city. Characterised by its three ‘fingers’ that extend into the Aegean, this region of Greece is loved for its heritage as well as its balmy Mediterranean climate and stunning natural beauty.
This popular beach destination offers the longest single stretch of coastline in Greece: 500 km of beautiful sandy beaches, deep bays, and tranquil waters which are perfect for diving or snorkelling. Situated on the first of the region’s three peninsulas, Athitos is a charming seafront village with traditional Greek restaurants and history in the form of the local Folklore Museum. Further north, it’s possible to visit the remains of the ancient city of Olynthos with its fabulously preserved floor mosaics.
To experience true unspoiled Greece, head to the Sithonia peninsula, where you’ll find deserted beaches surrounded by pine forests - Metamorfosi is often claimed to be one of the most beautiful on the Sithonia coast. From the port of Ormos Panagias, take a boat trip to explore the coast of the monastic republic of Mount Athos, an area walled off from tourists due to its religious sacredness.
