Evia —
The island of Evia, located off the eastern coast of Central Greece, offers great beaches, a pleasant climate, prominent monuments and delectable local cuisine. The island is one of the most unspoiled and unique of all the Greek Islands and a wonderful choice for nature and sports lovers, or those seeking a purely relaxing escape.
Must sees:
- Chalkida: The island’s capital is a charming town known for its historic landmarks, including the famous Chalkida Bridge with its unique tidal phenomenon
- The Monastery of St. David: This monastery is a serene place to visit, with beautiful architecture and stunning views
- Karystos: Check out Karystos Castle and the ancient Dragon Houses in this mysterious and historic costal town.
Culinary culture:
Evia's culinary culture offers a diverse range of flavours inspired by its coastal landscape and agricultural traditionas. It focuses on a mix of fresh seafood, hearty mountain dishes, and Mediterranean flavours. When it comes to seafood, you can find local fish like bream, bass, octopus, and squid, often grilled or served in stews. Mezedes are also common just like in many other parts of Greece. This includes small plates like tzatzik, feta, dolmades, and saganaki.
Dive deeper:
To immerse yourself even further in Evia's rich cultural heritage and captivating history, plan a visit to the Cave of the Cyclops, which, according to legend, was the home of the mythical Cyclops, Polyphemus. Another must-see is the town of Eretria, which offers a blend of ancient history, natural beauty, and modern charm. Explore its beautiful town beach, visit the Archaeological Museum, or simply wander through its enchanting old town.
Good to know:
The official language of Greece, including Evia, is Greek. While many Greeks, particularly in tourist areas, speak some English. Greece uses the Euro (€) as its official currency. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted though it's always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller villages. Evia enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
