Your destination

Crete

Myth and Mediterranean magic collide on Greece’s largest island, where golden beaches, mountain-fringed gorges, and age-old traditions create a tapestry of timeless beauty. Crete is a place where minotaurs once roamed, Venetian harbours gleam in the sun, and the scent of wild thyme drifts on the breeze.

Must sees:

  • Palace of Knossos – Step into the past at this legendary Minoan site, where frescoed halls and labyrinthine ruins whisper ancient tales.
  • Chania’s Old Town – Lose yourself in a maze of cobbled lanes, Venetian mansions, and waterfront tavernas bathed in golden light.
  • Samaria Gorge – Hike through towering limestone cliffs and wildflower-strewn valleys on one of Europe’s most breathtaking trails.
  • Elafonissi Beach – Escape to a dreamlike shore where pink sands meet crystal-clear turquoise waters.

Culinary culture:

Indulge in dakos, a rustic bruschetta of crisp barley rusks topped with juicy tomatoes and creamy mizithra cheese. Feast on slow-roasted lamb infused with mountain herbs, or sample fresh seafood straight from the Aegean. And no meal is complete without a shot of fiery raki, best enjoyed in the company of hospitable locals.

Dive deeper:

Beyond the postcard-perfect coastlines, Crete’s soul lies in its villages. Experience the hypnotic rhythms of lyra music at a traditional panigiri festival, where locals dance the night away in celebration. Visit Anogeia, a mountain stronghold of resilience and folklore, or explore the eerie cave of Zeus, said to be the birthplace of the mighty god himself.

Good to know:

Summer sizzles with long, sun-drenched days, while spring and autumn offer milder weather perfect for hiking. Public transport links major towns, but hiring a car unlocks hidden coves and mountain hideaways. The currency is the euro, and a warm “Yassas” goes a long way in forging friendships.
