From the CNic Gemini Hotel, a 4* establishment nestled in Messonghi on the island’s south-east coast, you’ll discover the ‘Emerald Island’ of the Ionian Sea in all its splendour. From UNESCO World Heritage sites and an Albanian odyssey in Saranda to a heavenly excursion to Paxos and Antipaxos, each day will reveal a new facet of this Greek gem. Blue caves, hilltop monasteries, ancient olive groves and golden sandy beaches will round off this unique immersion. A rich, sun-drenched week with just the right pace to experience Corfu to the full, with family or friends.
Your suggested itinerary (based on a 6-night stay):
Day 1: Welcome to Corfu
Arrival at Corfu Airport and transfer to your 4-star hotel in Messonghi, a charming coastal village in the south-east of the island, through which a river flows directly into the sea. Settle into your room, where a bottle of wine will be waiting for you on arrival to celebrate the start of your holiday. Enjoy your complimentary upgrade to half-board, as well as the hotel’s facilities: swimming pools, a tennis court and Mediterranean gardens. Take your first dip at Messonghi beach, just a stone’s throw from the hotel, or in one of the swimming pools, before savouring your first dinner to unwind gently after your journey. An evening of entertainment with the hotel team to experience the warm, family-friendly atmosphere of the Gemini.
Day 2: Corfu Town (UNESCO) and the Kanoni Peninsula
Breakfast at the hotel before setting off for Corfu’s Old Town, a Venetian gem listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll through its colourful narrow streets, where Italian architecture blends with British mansions, and admire Spianáda Square (the largest in Europe) and its arcades inspired by the Rue de Rivoli. Visit the Old Fortress overlooking the sea with its 360° panoramic views, then explore the Church of Saint Spyridon (1589), dedicated to the island’s patron saint. Lunch at your leisure in one of the Old Town’s tavernas. Continue on to the Kanoni Peninsula, the island’s most photographed spot, to admire the iconic Vlachernes Monastery and the islet of Pontikonissi (Ulysses’ ship, turned to stone by Poseidon according to legend). Return to the hotel in the late afternoon for your half-board dinner.
Day 3: Day trip to Albania – Saranda and the site of Butrint (UNESCO)
Early morning departure at 7.30 am from the hotel for a unique journey between two countries separated by just a 30-minute sea crossing. Transfer to Corfu’s international port and embarkation for the crossing of the Ionian Sea to Saranda, the Pearl of the Balkans, accompanied by a French-speaking guide. Excursion to Butrint, an exceptional archaeological site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled amidst lush natural surroundings. Explore the remarkable Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian ruins, which lie in layers of history: the ancient theatre, the baptistery with its sumptuous mosaics, and the Venetian ramparts. Lunch is included at a typical local tavern, where you can sample Albanian cuisine. Free time in the afternoon in Saranda: stroll along the seafront, shop for souvenirs or relax in the sun. Return by boat to Corfu, arriving at the hotel around 7.30 pm. (Please ensure you have your passport with you; a port tax of €20 per person is payable in cash on arrival.)
Day 4: Paleokastritsa, Angelokastro and the Canal of Love
Breakfast at the hotel before setting off for Paleokastritsa, the legendary bay with its six emerald-green coves. Visit the Monastery of the Virgin Mary (13th century) perched on the hillside; according to tradition, throw a coin into the well to ensure your return to Corfu, then set off on a traditional boat trip through the secret sea caves. Swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of this legendary bay. Next, climb up to Angelokastro, the ‘Castle of the Angels’ perched 300 metres above, one of Greece’s most imposing fortresses with unbeatable views across the entire west coast. Finish with a legendary swim in Sidari’s ‘Canal of Love’: swim across it to find true love, according to local legend. Return to the hotel for your half-board dinner and a lively evening organised by the Gemini team.
Day 5: Sea Excursion to Paxos & Antipaxos
Breakfast at the hotel before setting sail from the port of Corfu for a heavenly day on the Ionian Sea. Marvel at the spectacular views of the southern coast as you sail towards the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos. Weather permitting, explore the blue-tinged caves of Antipaxos before enjoying a swim in the clear, turquoise waters of this little paradise. Enjoy total relaxation on the white sandy beaches, including the famous Voutoumi, regularly ranked amongst the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Then head to Paxos, where you can visit Gaios, the charming capital with its pastel-coloured houses, or take the time to discover the island’s beautiful hidden coves. In the afternoon, sail back to Corfu whilst enjoying a magnificent sunset over the Ionian Sea. Return to the hotel for your half-board dinner. An unforgettable day of snorkelling, relaxation and exploring the island.
Day 6: The Authentic South – Achilleion, Lake Korission and the kumquat distillery
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before setting off to explore the magnificent Achilleion Palace in Gastouri, the former residence of Empress Sissi of Austria, just a few minutes’ drive from your hotel. Admire its hanging gardens, its mythological statues (including the magnificent ‘Dying Achilles’) and the spectacular sea views. Continue on to Lake Korission, a nature reserve untouched by mass tourism and home to over 126 species of birds. Enjoy the magnificent Halikounas beach, a stretch of wild sand separating the lake from the sea, ideal for a swim away from the crowds. Visit a kumquat distillery – the iconic speciality of Corfu (a fruit introduced by the British) – and sample liqueurs, jams and handmade sweets. Return to the hotel at the end of the day for a memorable dinner overlooking the Ionian Sea.
Day 7: A day of wellness and final treats
Treat yourself to a morning of pure relaxation at the hotel. Sleep in, laze by the pool or enjoy one last swim at Messonghi beach. For the more active, there’s a game of tennis on the hotel courts or activities for the whole family organised by the entertainment team. Lunch at your leisure in one of Messonghi’s restaurants. Free time for some last-minute shopping: olive oil, thyme honey, handmade ceramics and, of course, kumquats. Enjoy your final half-board dinner at the hotel before your transfer to the airport, timed to suit your flight, your heart filled with unforgettable Mediterranean memories.
