Day 2: "Unexpected Urban" Athens City Tour
Visit the true heart and soul of Athens on a walking tour where you will witness some of the city's greatest contrasts. You‘ll see buildings of amazing architecture, that reflect the vision of modern Athens as a successor to the glory that was Ancient Athens, as well as architecture that represents the Modernist and inter-war movements. As you are slowly discovering the city you will learn that there are many secrets that lie beneath the surface and that the past is always just a few steps from the present.
You’ll also get a chance to explore some gentrified neighborhoods that are devoted to small businesses, but now they’re all interspersed with trendy eateries and funky little bars. This is where you can see some of the city’s best street art, come across a new jewelry designer, or shop for vintage clothing at one of the retro boutiques. And as modernity coexists with tradition, you’ll find out how the Ottoman past is still alive in Athens’ flea market, one of the liveliest neighborhoods of the city, where the old and the new generations still meet today.
By the end of our tour, we hope that you’ll have seen the true soul of Athens and its people, a city with a thousand stories still standing, as it has since ancient times, right on the border between the East and the West. When the tour ends you can spend your time as you want or return to your hotel for the overnight.
Day 3: Delicious Athens Food Tour
Discover a different side of the city by joining the Greeks in what is probably their favorite activity: eating! Experience the best of Athens one delicious bite at a time. Your English-speaking guide will meet you and take you for that essential pick-me-up, Greek coffee, at one of the landmark coffee houses of the city. You’ll get an explanation of the role of food in Greek life, and of the traditions of Athenians in particular.
Next, it’s a treat from the street, as you sample a koulouri, one of the all-time classic snacks on the go, before you duck into a carefully selected specialty food store that prides itself on its wide selection of Greek products. Here, you’ll be able to taste different olive oils, spreads and other surprises, but remember to pace yourself – there are seven more food stops to follow!
This is your chance to be food-adventurous – among the upcoming stops is a baklava bakery with a long history and some of the best syropy sweets in Greece. Then, it’s time for authentic souvlaki and fried potatoes at a popular grill spot before heading into the traditional “belly of the city”, the bustling Varvakios Market, the biggest and most popular fish, meat and vegetable market in the whole of Athens. At the stalls, you’ll see plenty of familiar foods, but you’ll find lots of surprises as well, particularly in the central fish hall, where the catch of the day is often some unusual deep-water denizen.
As you continue your walk, take the city’s Spice Street and drop in at a shop with an incredible variety of local condiments and herbs such as Greek oregano and Krokos Kozanis, otherwise known as Greek Red Saffron. Find out how these items and others are used in Greek cooking (as well as other culinary secrets the locals have to offer) while you browse the shelves for exotic cooking ingredients. Stop by a local pastry shop for a serious sugar rush as you tuck into a bougatsa (a traditional cream-filled phyllo treat). The last stop on the tour is for a selection of scrumptious Greek meze (like tapas, only better) at a charming deli. Here, you’ll be able to try classic appetizers, variety of cheese and cured meats. When they finally clear the plates away here, the mission will be accomplished – you’ll leave with a full and happy stomach and a much better understanding of the world of Greek food.
When the tour ends you can spend your time as you want or return to your hotel for the overnight.

Your Destination —
Athens
It was Athens that brought the world drama, history, poetry, and philosophy, and a visit to this ancient city offers no end of attractions. Indeed, the towering columns of the 2,000-year-old Parthenon still dominate the city skyline, a homage to the goddess Athena. No visit to the city would be complete without walking up to the Acropolis and admiring its structures: aside from the Parthenon, you can see the Erechtheion, a temple dedicated to Athena and Poseidon, and the Propylaea, the ancient gateway to the hill citadel.
Walking through the city is the best way to discover its history. In the shadow of the Acropolis, Plaka is a particularly interesting neighbourhood with a village feel, full of traditional Greek taverns, churches, and smaller museums - as well as the Cine Paris, a charming outdoor cinema with a stunning view of the Acropolis. Elsewhere, don't miss the famous changing of the guards in Constitution Square every hour on the hour.
