Your Destination —
Kefalonia (sometimes spelled Cephalonia) is located in the Ionian Sea, roughly 30 miles west of mainland Greece. The island is a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors from around the world with its heavenly beaches, pleasant climate, lush forests, friendly residents and delicious food. An area rich in natural beauty, there are many things to see and do in Kefalonia.
As well as exotic beaches, visitors can explore the quaint and traditional villages of Argostoli, Fiscardo and Assos, and head to Mount Ainos National Park. This park is filled with fir and pine trees, interesting caves and magnificent panoramic views. For walkers, there are a variety of trails to choose from, so you're sure to find one that suits your ability.
Located on the far end of a natural bay surrounded by forests and fringed by mountains, Argostoli is a thriving harbour town. Once a major administrative centre in Kefalonia, the city was flattened by a catastrophic earthquake in 1953 which raised the entire island 60cm above its former level. The rebuild in the following years has brought with it a vibrant selection of shops, cafes and restaurants. The long promenade is perfect for an evening stroll, or follow the path to the secluded beaches, shaded by pines, to the north of the town. The main draw of tourists is the famous Caretta Caretta turtles who have chosen to feed at Koutavos Lagoon or from the off-casts from local fisherman.
