Your Destination —
Home to breweries, a magnificent Old Town, and an array of museums and galleries, the capital of Bavaria is a wonderful choice for a memorable city break, and a culture-lover’s dream. Founded by Benedictine monks sometime in the 10th century, the city is now considered a major centre of technology, art, and science, successfully rebuilding itself after the destruction of the Second World War.
Start your exploration of Munich in Stachus Square, with its concentration of restaurants, cafes, and shops, before moving on to the luxury boutiques on Maximilianstrasse or admire the Gothic city hall on Marienplatz. For a taste of local life, wander the Schwabing district north of the city centre, where you can take a wander through the 900-acre English Garden, and even go surfing on the Eisbach river!
Visitors to the city towards late September will find it difficult to miss the annual Oktoberfest, a historic and worlds-largest Volksfest, an expansive beer festival and funfair where visitors can taste the product of some of the city’s oldest and best breweries! To immerse yourself in more Bavarian history, visit Nymphenburg Palace, a Baroque summer palace for the House of Wittselbac; or, take a day trip to the picture-perfect, fairytale-like Neuschwanstein Castle, perched on a clifftop in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps.
