Germany
Welcome to Germany
A country where history and modernity collide, Germany is a land of fairytale castles, cosmopolitan cities, and breathtaking landscapes. From the snow-dusted peaks of Bavaria to the wind-swept shores of the North Sea, it’s a place that rewards explorers with its diverse scenery, rich culture, and vibrant urban energy. Whether you’re strolling through the medieval streets of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, soaking up Berlin’s creative buzz, or cruising past vine-clad hills on the Moselle River, Germany offers an intoxicating blend of past and present.
Don’t miss
- Berlin’s dynamic spirit – A city that wears its history on its sleeve, with world-class museums, cutting-edge galleries, and legendary nightlife.
- Bavarian splendour – Wander Munich’s beer gardens, admire Neuschwanstein Castle, and explore the Alps.
- Romantic Rhine & Moselle River – A region of dramatic gorges, half-timbered villages, medieval fortresses, and some of Europe’s finest vineyards.
- Dresden’s Baroque beauty – Rebuilt to its former glory, this city stuns with its grand palaces and cultural treasures.
- The Baltic coast – Windswept beaches, charming Hanseatic towns, and fresh sea air make this an underrated gem.
Culinary culture
Germany’s food scene is far more than bratwurst and beer. The Moselle Valley is a haven for wine lovers, producing world-renowned Rieslings that pair beautifully with local dishes like Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart). In Bavaria, hearty meals like pretzels with Obatzda (a creamy cheese dip) and Schweinshaxe (roast pork knuckle) are staples, while Berlin’s street food scene is best sampled through currywurst and Döner kebabs. And for beer enthusiasts, Germany’s breweries range from centuries-old monastic traditions to experimental craft beer hubs.
Dive deeper
Leipzig has a thriving underground arts scene, while Weimar, the birthplace of Bauhaus, remains an intellectual hub. In the Harz Mountains, folklore comes to life during Walpurgis Night, a festival of witches and bonfires. Meanwhile, the Sorbs, a Slavic minority in Lusatia, keep centuries-old customs alive, from intricate Easter egg painting to traditional dress.
Good to know
Germany has an efficient rail network, making train travel the best way to explore. The currency is the euro (€), and while English is widely spoken in cities, a few German phrases go a long way. The best time to visit depends on your plans—summer offers warm days and lively festivals, autumn brings golden forests and wine harvests (particularly in the Moselle region), while winter transforms towns into Christmas market wonderlands.
