Founded in the 10th century by the counts of Toulouse, Montpellier offers visitors the chance to wander grand boulevards and sample delicious cuisine from the Languedoc region, and though it’s a fast-growing city - with one-third of its residents students - boasts a laid-back atmosphere perfect for an alternative break to Nice or Marseille.
Just 10km from the coast, the influence of the Mediterranean can be felt in this lively town, with oyster sellers setting up stalls along the streets for you to try fresh produce - if you’re hankering for the sea air, it’s also possible to take a day trip to a local beach, of which Espiguette beach is frequently voted one of the most beautiful in France.
Back in Montpellier, visit the Fabre Museum to soak up some 800 beautiful works of art, before taking a break at a cafe on the Place de la Comédie.
