Lille —
A historic French city with a wealth of culture and gastronomy, Lille is an excellent choice for a city break and offers a wonderful alternative to the tourist throngs of Paris. From its medieval architecture, to Lille’s marvellous museums and thriving culinary scene, guests will find no shortage of activities.
The heart of the city is the Place du General de Gaulle, a former medieval market square and now a popular meeting point for visitors and locals alike. Featuring captivating architecture ranging from the 17th-20th century, the centrepiece of the square is the Vieille Bourse, the former stock exchange and now home to a range of secondhand bookshops. Shopping fans will no doubt be drawn to the Euralille centre, while Old Lille is full of antique stores and contemporary boutiques.
For a cultured afternoon, make sure to visit one of the city’s finest museums, the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, which after the Louvre in Paris, contains the largest collection of paintings in France. After a long day exploring and soaking up the history, head to rue des Bouchers to sample some authentic French cuisine at one of the bistrots. Try the regional cheeses and charcuterie on offer, as well as some authentic Flemish beer or French wine.
