La Rosière - Montvalezan —
La Rosière – Montvalezan, perched at 1,850 m on a sunny balcony above the Tarentaise valley, is a Franco-Italian ski resort with a unique alpine spirit. Linked with La Thuile in Italy to form the Espace San Bernardo ski area, it combines Savoyard charm with a touch of dolce vita. With panoramic views across the mountains and snow-sure slopes, it is a destination for both winter adventure and summer escapes.
Must-sees:
- Espace San Bernardo: A cross-border ski area offering 160 km of slopes, from wide pistes to challenging descents, all with stunning Alpine views.
- Petit Saint-Bernard Pass: A historic mountain crossing with sweeping panoramas, accessible on skis in winter or on foot in summer.
- Fort de la Redoute Ruinée: A striking 19th-century fortress above the pass, blending military history with spectacular mountain scenery.
Culinary culture:
La Rosière celebrates both Savoyard and Italian flavours. Enjoy a traditional fondue or raclette, then cross the border for pizza or pasta in La Thuile. Local Beaufort cheese and génépi liqueur are not to be missed, whether shared in a cosy chalet or savoured on a sunlit terrace.
Dive deeper:
In winter, the resort offers skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and even heliskiing from the Italian side. Summer reveals another face, with hiking trails through the Vanoise National Park, mountain biking routes, and paragliding flights above green valleys. The area is rich in alpine wildlife and wildflowers, while traditional hamlets preserve the region’s heritage.
Good to know:
La Rosière is about 2h30 from Geneva and 3h from Lyon airports, with train access via Bourg-Saint-Maurice. The ski season runs from early December to late April, while summer activities are best enjoyed from June to September. With its south-facing slopes, don’t forget sunscreen even in winter.
