Brittany —
Welcome to Brittany
Perched on the rugged northwest coast of France, Brittany is a region of windswept beaches, dramatic cliffs, and mystical forests. Celtic heritage pulses through its stone villages and festivals, while historic towns like Rennes and Saint-Malo invite wandering along cobbled streets and fortified ramparts. The coastline alternates between serene sandy bays and wild Atlantic shores, making it a paradise for walkers, sailors, and those drawn to maritime charm.
Don’t miss
- Saint-Malo’s walled old town and tidal beaches
- The pink granite coast around Perros-Guirec
- Carnac’s mysterious megalithic alignments
- The medieval village of Dinan, with its timbered houses
- Pointe du Raz, a dramatic cliff with sweeping ocean views
Culinary culture
Brittany is synonymous with buttery crêpes, delicate galettes, and fresh seafood, especially oysters and mussels. Don’t overlook the region’s cider, locally distilled lambig (apple brandy), and rich salted caramel treats. Coastal markets brim with artisanal cheeses, charcuterie, and seasonal vegetables that reflect the land and sea alike.
Dive deeper
Venture inland to uncover Breton folklore, from fest-noz night dances to tales of korrigans (mischievous fairies). Local Breton language signage still appears in villages, and medieval pardons—religious festivals blending ceremony with lively music, offer a glimpse of living tradition rarely seen by casual visitors.
Good to know
The euro is the local currency, and spring through early autumn offers the best weather for coastal hikes and festival attendance. Car travel is often easiest for exploring remote coastal sites, though regional trains link major towns. Coastal tides are dramatic—check schedules if planning beach walks or visits to tidal islands.
