Arcachon —
Tucked between a protected bay and the vast pine forest of La Teste-de-Buch, Arcachon sits on the Atlantic coast of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, a little over an hour from Bordeaux. Known for its elegant 19th-century villas, mild climate and unhurried pace of life, it has long drawn those in search of fresh air, open water and the quiet pleasures of the French coast.
Must-sees:
- Dune du Pilat: The tallest sand dune in Europe, rising dramatically from the edge of the pine forest with sweeping views across the bay and out to the Atlantic.
- Arcachon Bay: A vast, sheltered basin where oyster beds, sailing boats and migratory birds share the same calm waters — best explored by boat or bicycle along the shore.
- Cap Ferret: A slender peninsula of pine trees and oyster shacks facing Arcachon across the bay, reached by ferry and known for its laid-back atmosphere and excellent seafood.
- La Ville d'Hiver: Arcachon's historic winter quarter, a network of quiet streets lined with ornate villas and ancient trees, built in the 19th century as a retreat for convalescents.
Culinary culture:
Arcachon is synonymous with oysters — plucked fresh from the bay and eaten simply with a squeeze of lemon and a glass of chilled Entre-Deux-Mers. Arcachon enjoys a mild Atlantic climate, with warm summers tempered by sea breezes and relatively gentle winters. July and August bring the largest crowds; May, June and September offer the same light and warmth with considerably more room to breathe.
