Aix-en-Provence —

With its sun-dappled squares, tree-lined boulevards and fountains whispering beneath the plane trees, the city invites slow wandering and quiet indulgence. At the foot of the majestic Montagne Sainte-Victoire, immortalised by Cézanne, Aix offers a perfect harmony of heritage, art and gastronomy.
Must-sees:
- Cours Mirabeau: The city’s iconic promenade, lined with cafés, boutiques and elegant 17th-century mansions.
- Hôtel de Caumont: A jewel of Aix’s architecture and a must for art lovers, hosting major temporary exhibitions in a refined setting.
- Saint-Sauveur Cathedral: A stunning blend of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles, reflecting centuries of Provençal faith and artistry.
- Atelier de Cézanne: Step into the painter’s preserved studio, where light and stillness reveal the landscapes that inspired him.
Culinary culture:
Aix’s flavours are a celebration of sweetness and sunshine. Savour the city’s emblematic calisson d’Aix, a diamond-shaped almond and candied melon confection, or try the Aixois from the iconic Pâtisserie Weibel - a soft cake with calisson cream. Don’t miss Christophe’s madeleines, freshly baked and delicately golden, or sip a chilled rosé on a terrace as cicadas sing.
Dive deeper:
Follow Cézanne’s footsteps on a trail leading towards the Tholonet, where the Montagne Sainte-Victoire glows pink at sunset. Pause for a game of pétanque under the plane trees, a glass of pastis in hand- a true Aixois ritual. For a change of pace, Marseille is less than 40 minutes away, offering the Mediterranean’s salty air, vibrant markets and a taste of the sea.
Good to know:
Aix-en-Provence is about 25 minutes from Marseille-Provence Airport and easily reached by train from Paris in just over three hours. The best time to visit is from April to October, when the light is golden and the markets overflow with lavender, olives and fresh produce.
