Day 1: Arrive in Rovaniemi

Lapland is as close as reality gets to those who dream of a winter wonderland. Contrasts are a key factor in the allure of Lapland where 24-hour sunlight in the summer replaces the dark winter days. The hustle and bustle of towns and ski resorts is just minutes away from the peace and quiet of the wild wilderness.

  • Night at Sokos Vaakuna, Arctic City, Santa Claus Hotel

Immerse yourself in the magic of Lapland. The first stop is the Santa Claus Village, located on the Arctic Circle. You will participate in the traditional ceremony of crossing the Arctic Circle and receive a diploma certifying your visit. After the ceremony, you will experience a reindeer sled at the Santa Claus Village and enjoy a hot drink around the fire.

Your destinations

Lapland casts a powerful spell: the midnight sun, the aurora borealis (Northern Lights) and roaming reindeer are part of its allure – as is Santa Claus himself, who ‘officiallyresides here – along with the awesome latitudes. At Nuorgam, the northernmost point, you have passed Iceland and nearly all of Canada and Alaska.

Spanning 30% of Finland’s land area, Lapland is home to just 3% of its population. Its vast wilderness is ripe for exploring on foot, skis or sled. The sense of space, pure air and big skies are what's most memorable here, more so than the towns.

Lapland’s far north is known as Sápmi, home of the Sámi, whose main communities are around Inari, Utsjoki and Hetta. Rovaniemi, on the Arctic Circle, is the most popular gateway to the north.
