Lapland —
Lapland, a realm of Arctic wonders, offers a mesmerising blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. From the midnight sun to the awe-inspiring aurora borealis, this northern expanse is both tranquil and wild. Beyond its famous snow-laden landscapes lies Sápmi, the homeland of the Sámi people, whose traditions continue to thrive around Inari and Utsjoki. Start your journey in the official home of Santa Claus and the gateway to this enchanting region.
Must-sees:
- Nuorgam: Finland’s northernmost point, offering views beyond Iceland and most of Canada.
- The Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos in Inari: A hub for indigenous heritage and modern Sámi life.
- Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park: Where untouched wilderness invites exploration on skis or foot.
Culinary culture:
Lapland’s cuisine reflects its Arctic roots, with ingredients like reindeer, Arctic char, and foraged berries taking centre stage. Dishes such as sautéed reindeer with lingonberries or Lappish salmon soup offer a taste of tradition.
Dive deeper:
To truly understand Lapland, immerse yourself in Sámi culture. Attend a traditional reindeer herding demonstration or join a guided tour to learn about the legends and lifestyle of this resilient community. Visit the Siida Museum in Inari, where exhibits bring to life the history, art, and connection of the Sámi to their Arctic home.
Good to know:
The local currency is the Euro (€). Winters bring near-total darkness, ideal for Northern Lights viewing, while summers feature the midnight sun. Transport is best by car, but guided tours offer access to remote areas. Dress warmly in winter, as temperatures can plummet below -30°C.
