Optional Excursions —
You may choose to add any of the following excursions to your tour:
After breakfast, meet our guide then drive 70km out of the bustling Saigon to the Cu Chi Tunnels, created in 1948 to assist the Viet Minh to combat the French. This is an underground city with living areas, kitchens, storage, weapon shops, field hospitals and command centers. During the Vietnam War, the entire area of Cu Chi was a designated fire-free zone and was heavily bombarded.
From 1988, two sections of the tunnels have been opened for visitors. Head back to city centre and have lunch on your own. In the afternoon, continue to visit the moving and harrowing War Remnants Museum, which presents a partial, but riveting, view of the American War, as it is known in Vietnam. Continue to the Reunification Palace, the former residence of the Indochina Governor-General and later President of the Republic of Southern Vietnam until reunification on April 30, 1975.
Next, visit other highlights of the city including the gorgeous Notre Dame Cathedral. If time permits, you can visit the Dong Khoi area, where located the legendary Continental Hotel which is made famous by Graham Greene in "The Quiet American".
After breakfast, depart from your hotel at 08.00, and embark on a 2-hour drive to Ben Tre province crossing Rach Mieu Bridge. On arrival in Hung Vuong Pier, hop on a motorised boat on Ben Tre River – one of the tributaries of Mekong River while sight-seeing lively activities along the river as fishing, water transferring. Enjoy several stops at local family-run factories and in tropical orchards.
After lunch, take a rowing-boat along a beautiful water palm creek before meeting up the motorised boat and transfer you back to the pier. Our car will pick you up there and drive back to the hotel.
Around 08.00 the day starts with a visit to the complex dedicated to Ho Chi Minh – the nation’s founder, containing Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum (viewed from outside on Mondays, Fridays and afternoons due to closure), and the house on stilts, One Pillar Pagoda.
Next up visit Temple of Literature – Vietnam’s first university which was constructed in the 11th century. Later on, we walk around the Old Streets which were named after the specific goods once offered for sale at these places. Enjoy the walk through the street food stalls, learning more about traditional Vietnamese cuisine, its culture and local eating habits. Before enjoying the special Water Puppet show – a uniquely Northern Vietnamese art form depicting scenes from rural life and episodes of national history, take a one hour rickshaw tour around to enjoy the peaceful life of locals.
