Day 2: Visit Bangkok

After breakfast, set out to discover Bangkok's most beautiful attractions and travel through the city's fascinating canal system. Start at the magnificent Grand Palace to admire the beauty of this vast temple complex which boasts some of the finest Thai Buddhist architecture in the country. Explore the vast grounds and many dazzling buildings, including the revered Wat Phra Kaew, home to the precious 14th-century Emerald Buddha statue. Next, cross the road to Wat Pho, one of Bangkok's largest and oldest temples, housing over 1,000 Buddha images. The temple is considered the kingdom's first public university and the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, housing one of the oldest massage schools in the country.

After lunch at a local restaurant, you will visit the Siam Museum in the afternoon, which has several exhibits on the national identity and history of the Thai people, as well as their relationship with neighbouring cultures. Afterwards, hop aboard a traditional long-tail boat to meander through the picturesque canals and experience the quieter side of Bangkok life, which would not be complete without an exploration of the spectacular and iconic Wat Arun. Take time to explore this iconic temple, which towers 79 metres above the Chao Phraya River and offers a panoramic view of Bangkok from the Thonburi side.

Please note: the meeting and arrival point is at MRT Sanamchai - exit 3.

Night at the hotel in Bangkok

Day 3: Free day

Start the day with a tasty breakfast before enjoying a free day to enjoy the beauty of the city on your own.

Day 4 : Bangkok – Damnoen Saduak - Kanchanaburi

Depart with your guide to Ratchaburi province, about 100km southwest of Bangkok. This picturesque old province is home to one of the country's most famous floating markets, Damnoen Saduak. Explore the network of canals on a traditional long-tail boat or stroll around to enjoy the local atmosphere.

Shop for souvenirs or sample local delicacies. After your shopping and culture session, head north on the road to Kanchanaburi, home to the famous 'Bridge over the River Kwai', built during World War II. Take time to explore this iconic structure, as well as the museum. The rails are still in use today; board the train at Nam Tok station and ride the famous 'Death Railway' yourself, through the jungle and along a breathtaking cliff overlooking the river. You will then have time to visit the poignant war cemetery, where the remains of 6,982 Allied POWs lie, most of whom lost their lives during the construction of the bridge and railway to Burma.

Overnight at the hotel in Kanchanaburi.

Day 5: Kanchanaburi - Erawan Waterfall - Ayutthaya

After breakfast, transfer to Erawan National Park to visit the Erawan Waterfalls. The 7 levels of this amazing waterfall descend 1,500 m. down the steep cliffs. It is surrounded by a beautiful forest with many types of trees and orchids. There is a path to the 6th level and from there you have to climb the cliff to reach the 7th level. The climb is worth it for the sight of water tumbling down the rocks and into the deep pool below. This waterfall resembles the head of the elephant Erawan - the three-headed elephant of Hindu mythology - which gives the waterfall its name. Lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Ayutthaya.

Overnight at the hotel in Ayutthaya.

Day 6: Ayutthaya Historical Park - Chiang Mai

After breakfast, discover more ancient temple ruins and crumbling pagodas that once formed the largest and most important settlement in Thailand. You will explore Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, a temple that is off-limits to monks (due to its "royal" status), followed by Wat Mahathat, a highly sacred temple famous for its Buddha relics and traditional style that served as a model for other temples in the ancient kingdom. What appears to be the most important landmark of the temple is the head of a sandstone Buddha image intertwined in the roots of a Bodhi tree.

In the late evening, your guide will drop you off at the railway station. Board the overnight train to Chiang Mai. (No tour guide on the train)

Day 7: Arrival in Chiang Mai - Tuk Tuk City Tour - Chiang Mai Street Culinary Tour

Arrive at Chiang Mai train station early in the morning, meet the local guide who will accompany you throughout the trip to Chiang Mai. After breakfast in the vicinity of the station, prepare for the city tour by traditional tuk tuk rickshaw.

Discover Waroros Market, the largest local market in Chiang Mai. The place is full of local food, desserts and fruits, among others, for you to enjoy. Back in the rickshaw, continue to Wat Puak Tam, which is the brass ornament making centre of the Puak Tam community. Most of the temples and hotels in Chiang Mai commission this community as well as others further afield such as hotels in Yunnan, China.

Learn about the history of this community and how to make a brass ornament to take home as a souvenir. Back on three wheels, you'll head to Wat Srisuphan, also known as the Silver Temple, because of its impressive silver craft decoration. Due to ancient Buddhist customs, women are not allowed inside the temple and must remain outside. In the vicinity of Wat Sri Suphan there are many small silver workshops where it is possible to watch the local craftsmen at work.

Lunch en route.

In the late afternoon, meet your tour guide at the hotel and head to the local Chiang Mai Gate market (south gate) to sample local food and snacks sold by street vendors. In the old town, stop for the main course of your northern dinner called "Khao Soi" at the local restaurant Heun Phen. The restaurant is actually famous for its Khao Soi noodle curry.

Lunch and dinner times can be busy, with the restaurant serving a variety of northern Thai cuisines. Heun Phen turns into a canteen-style restaurant during the day, then transforms into a romantic restaurant at night. Afterwards, walk to visit Wat Chedi Luang by night. Then continue to the local Chang Peuk Gate market (north gate) and choose a fruit shake or Thai dessert. Take the local songtaew (red taxi) to the flower market, walk around to see the local food (what people eat), fruits, flowers and cross the Ping River to see Wat Gate Garam by night. End your trip at a local bar by the Ping River (1 choice of beer or soft drink). Take the local songtaew back to the hotel (in town only) or continue drinking at the local bar.

Overnight at hotel in Chiang Mai

Day 8: Chang Chill Elephant Sanctuary

Spend an informative day at an ethical elephant camp. Conservation awareness and behavioural observation of 6 resident elephants will make up your day. Watch these majestic animals play happily and graze as they do in their natural habitat. Prepare a delicious lunch for them, then enjoy Thai vegetarian dishes as you watch them eat.

Prepare medicinal concoctions with herbs gathered from the site's garden and meet mahouts and Karen tribesmen who will explain their culture and practices. Drive an hour and a half from Chiang Mai to ChangChill, a sanctuary that has spent the last few years transforming itself into a truly welcoming place for elephants. Upon arrival, staff members will introduce you to the sanctuary's past, its transition process, its current programs and its vision for the future.  Follow the guide on a path through the forest to view the elephants from a safe distance. For ethical reasons, the guides will explain that visitors are not allowed to interact with the elephants, but to observe them in their natural habitat, grazing and socialising without human disturbance.

Listen to a "live lecture" along the way and meet the mahouts who have dedicated their lives to protecting them.  Stop at a rest area to enjoy traditional Thai refreshments. Just below the rest station is a mud pit where the elephants bathe and play on hot days.

Overnight at a hotel in Chiang Mai

Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Day 9: Free Day

Free day or optional tours to explore the city further.

Optional "Chiang Dao Trekking" at extra cost:

Explore nature from Chiang Mai, and visit villages, and farmlands while enjoying delicious local food. Along the way, you will meet the local community and learn more about the hill tribe's way of life.

After an early morning hotel pick-up, we head north to the scenic Chiang Dao district to visit a Karen village and learn more about their way of life. Exploration of the village includes a weaving demonstration to watch these skilled artisans weave brightly coloured textiles in a tradition passed down through generations.

Afterwards, you will travel to Lisu village, the starting point of the trek. This 5km walk along the farmland takes you up and down to soak up the surrounding rural landscape. There are breaks along the way to interact with the local people as they go about their daily business and to learn about their customs and rituals.

The trek ends at Palong village, where a walk through the village reveals how the Royal Project, an NGO founded by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, is successfully improving the lives of villagers. Afterwards, transfer to Bua Thong Waterfall, also known as the Sticky Waterfall due to the limestone deposit that covers the rocks and makes it possible to climb on these unusual white rocks. Lunch is provided at this eye-catching sight before setting off on a hiking trail. For those who wish to rest, you can also choose to stay at the falls to relax. Afterwards, transfer to the hotel.
