This guided walking Spice Tour provides a rare experience to prove why Zanzibar is referred to as the “Spice Island”. The tour offers a look at small farms and plantations of the countryside and in the rural areas of Zanzibar where local people are growing cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices, medicinal and ornamental plants, and variety of tropical fruits.
Get the detailed description of the spices and learn how to use the different plants for local dishes, herbal medicine and traditional ceremonies, which are an important aspect of the Zanzibarian culture.
It also includes a visit to the Kidichi Persian Baths built in 1850 by Seyyid Said bin Sultan (first Sultan of Zanzibar) as a gift for his wife Princes Shehrzard (grand-daughter of Fateh Ali Shah of Persia).
This guided walking tour will take you to the 50 km2 Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, the only national park in Zanzibar. In the natural forest the smaller trees and shrubs make several sub-canopies under the highest canopy. The protected land includes a ground water forest, coastal forest, grass- land, with mangroves and salt marsh at the coast.
You will walk with an experienced park ranger through the nature trail of the forest, which is the habitat for many species of animals and birds. It is famous for its Red Colobus Monkey, an endangered specie endemic to Unguja/Zanzibar. The Zanzibar Red Colobus has been isolated from its mainland counterparts for at least ten to fifteen thousand years, thus producing distinct sub-species with different calls, eating habits and coat patterns. Jozani Forest has become the last stronghold in the world for this particular type of colobus.
Other species found in the forest are the Sykes monkey, bush babies, Duikers and rich variety of birds and butterflies.
Dhow Safari (Full Day, lunch included)
Join the Safari Blue crew for an epic day of aquatic activities! This is a full day excursion on locally made traditional sailing dhows. The boats are leaving from the fishing village of Fumba, which is an ideal starting point to explore Menai Bay, now designated as a conservation area. The bay has a number of uninhabited islands, isolated sandbanks, pristine marine life and crystal-clear turquoise water; and is frequented by humpback and bottlenose dolphins (85% probability of visibility).
The tour includes the chance to go snorkeling on a reef and enjoy a great seafood lunch. After lunch there is an opportunity to join an experienced crew and sail on an “ngalawa” or outrigger canoe made by hand from a single mango tree. When the tide allows you can swim through a lush mangrove forest in a beautiful hidden lagoon. Moreover you can climb a giant and unusual baobab tree, or just admire it from the ground.
When the day is done, the crew hoists a lateen sail (if the wind permits it) as you make a leisurely voyage back to Fumba.
