In a sheltered pocket, accessible by a spiral staircase, are the famous frescoes. Sigiriya's 5th century water gardens have been restored to their former glory.

Then, leave for Polonnaruwa and visit the medieval capital of Sri Lanka. This archaeological site, founded in the 12th century, was the work of a single king, Parakrama Bahu (1153 - 1186). Continue towards Matale, for a visit to the spice garden at the gates of the old capital Kandy. Spices are mainly produced in this region, and the area is particularly well-known for its cinnamon.
