Udawalawe lies south of the central hills of the island, and it surrounds the man-made reservoir of Udawalawe, which is part of the park. It is a mixture of the abandoned teak plantation, scrub jungle and grassland. The dry season is best to watch many herds of elephants that roam the park; which is usually between May and September. Almost the entire park is covered with tall, reedy Pohon grass, which grows all year round. Udawalawe is a superb place to watch elephants as an estimated 450 elephants live here!

Please note: this is leech country and therefore all clients are provided with leech-proof socks ideal for forest trekking through the undergrowth. Due to the dense forest mammal life can be more difficult to spot; of the 40 species listed you would have a good chance of seeing Giant Squirrels, Mongoose, Purple-Faced Langur, Wild Boar and Barking Deer. Rarer species include Rusty-Spotted cats, Fishing Cats, Indian Civet Cats, Porcupine and Leopard. Sightings of leopard are only occasional, though proof of their presence is easier to find, there have also been unconfirmed reports of a 'Panther' or black leopard in the jungle.

On this tour, you will visit a Turtle Hatchery and the famous port of Galle! The Turtle Hatchery lies 8 km south of Bentota at Kosgoda is said to be the best place to see giant turtles and their babies and is endowed with Hasselblad cameras. Galle, said to be the famous Tarshish of the Bible, is the port where the Portuguese first landed in Sri Lanka in the 16th-Century. Fortified by the Dutch who ruled maritime Sri Lanka in the 17th and 18th centuries, the city still retains the air of old Holland with its Old Dutch churches, monuments, fort, and ramparts, as well as quaint Old Dutch houses and narrow alleys still bearing Dutch names.

The all-inclusive package includes:

1. FOOD AND DRINKS
All food and beverage services will be "self-service". This service can only be obtained on an individual basis. Please refrain from giving food and drink to other guests who are not entitled to the package.

Please note: Guests under 18 stay on a full board basis with alcoholic drinks excluded.

 

2. BARS
All bars will close at 23:00 and thereafter any drinks consumed will be charged at the normal rate. You will be asked to sign invoices when ordering, which will be credited to the main extras invoice and paid prior to departure.

 

3. LATE DEPARTURE
All-inclusive services will cease at 12.00 noon on the day of departure. In the event of late departure, you will be asked to pay a mandatory nominal amount to the hotel.

This will allow you to keep your room and benefit from the services offered as part of the all-inclusive package until the time of your departure. However, this arrangement is subject to the availability of the room or, failing that, we will make a cloakroom available to you.

 

4. WRISTBANDS
All guests, including children, must wear the wristband on arrival and have it removed on departure.

 

5. BARS

- A separate all-inclusive bar will be open from 11:00 to 23:00.

- Drinks consumed in the hotel's other bars will be charged at the normal rate.

- Local spirits available include brandy, vodka, gin, rum, whisky and arrack. A glass of locally bottled wine will be served at lunch and dinner. All drinks are served by the glass.

- You can choose a local beer from the "3 Corners" or "Lion" brands (subject to availability), which will be served by the glass.

- Non-alcoholic drinks available include local products such as Coca Cola, Fanta, sparkling mineral water and other local varieties of sparkling water. Local fruit juices and cordials will be served by the glass.

- Juices/cordials - local products such as passion fruit, orange, lime, pineapple, mango and mixed fruit can be obtained from the bar or on request.

- You are advised to sign for all alcoholic drinks ordered, including beer, and to sign invoices even if they are included in the package.

 

6. MAIN RESTAURANT

The services offered by the outlet are of the buffet/fixed menu type and are operational for the three main meals at the following times

Breakfast 07:00 - 09:30.

Lunch 13:00 - 15:00.

Dinner 19:30 - 22:00.


There will be a variety of themed evenings such as Srilankan, International Chinese BarBecue, Italian, Asian... Tea and coffee will be served at all meal times.

 

7. COFFEE SHOP

- From 11:00 to 12:00, a choice of snacks will be available, as well as a salad bar and a tropical fruit counter.

- Cakes and biscuits are available from 15:30 to 17:00.

- Tea and coffee buffets are open from 10:00 to 18:00.

 

The all-inclusive package does not include

- Room service

- Champagne, Diet Coke, Imported Beer, Cigars and Cigarettes

- Laundry and telephone calls, emails/Internet browsing, faxes
