Your Itinerary —
Day 1: Arrival in Sri Lanka
Fly into Colombo airport where you will be met by your driver and transferred to your first hotel (approx. travel time: 1 hour). The rest of the day will be free to do as you please.
Overnight in Colombo.
Depart for Kosgoda after breakfast (approx. travel time: 2 hours 30 minutes). Kosgoda is world famous for its sea turtle conservation which has released about 3.5 million baby turtles into the wild. Although October to April is the main laying season, some eggs (mostly green turtles) can be found throughout the year.
On completion, continue to Galle (approx. travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes).
Galle is a coastal town where the Dutch presence is still visible. This ancient port is now the bustling provincial capital and administrative centre of the south. It is famous for its lovely Unawatuna Bay, where the sea is reef protected and therefore safe for swimming, the old Dutch “Star Fort” (a World Heritage Site) covering 36 hectares, the well-preserved Groote Kerk (Dutch Church), Dutch Government House, the New Oriental Hotel (built in 1684) and old bell tower.
On completion, continue to Udawalawe (approx. travel time: 3 hours 30 minutes).
Overnight in Udawalawe.
Embark on a safari through the Udawalawe National Park, this 30,821 hectares is famed for its abundant elephant herds (almost 400 in total). During a visit, it is not unusual to see whole herds of adults and young elephants feeding or bathing and playing in the water.
In addition to this main attraction, the park is home to many water buffalo, water monitor lizards, sambar deer, monkeys and the occasional leopard, as well as being an exciting location for bird enthusiasts.
Overnight in Udawalawe.
After Breakfast, check out of the hotel and proceed to the Railway station to catch your train to Nanu Oya (approx. travel time: 2 hours 30 minutes). Leave to Railway station, and board the train and leave for Nuwara Eliya. Enjoy the picturesque journey, the train snaking its way through the mountains through the tea country.
The vehicle will follow you to Nanu Oya, the last station before Nuwara Eliya. On arrival at the Nanu Oya railway Station, you will be picked up by your chauffeur guide and proceed on a scenic tour of this area. Thereafter check in to your hotel and relax.
Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.
Check out of your hotel and proceed to a Tea Estate to see how the world-famous "Ceylon tea" is manufactured while marvelling at some spectacular scenery. Thereafter continue to Kandy (approx. travel time: 2 hours 30 minutes).
Next stop, The Temple of the Tooth Relic. This a must-see: on the outside, the temple buildings are not magnificent or elaborately decorated, while within the temple buildings are richly carved and decorated with inlaid woods, ivory and lacquer. The relic of the tooth is kept in a two-story inner shrine fronted by two large elephant tusks.
On completion, proceed to Matale Spice Garden (approx. travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes). Matale is famous for its batik production and spice gardens. Batik has been an ancient art of painting cloth and today Sri Lanka is among the world leaders in the design of batik. Batik galleries and factories offer batik from simple single-coloured designs to intricate multi-coloured masterpieces.
Afterwards, continue to Habarana (approx. travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes).
Overnight in Habarana.
After breakfast leave for the Sigiriya Rock Fortress where you could climb the 1200 steps and admire the fabulous frescoes on the walls of the ancient rock fortress (approx. travel time: 20 minutes). The Sigiriya Rock Fortress is known as the 8th wonder of the world and should not be missed!
On completion, continue to Polonnaruwa (approx. travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes). Visit this ancient city, including the remains that have been cleared from the rainforest. The medieval capital of Ceylon, in the romantic lake of Parakrama, the kings of Ceylon settled here in the 11th century after abandoning Anuradhapura. Here you'll discover beautiful statues of Reclining and standing Buddha.
Thereafter return to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure, enjoying the hotel amenities.
Overnight in Habarana.
Check out of your hotel and proceed to Wadduwa for 2-4 nights relaxing on the beach (approx. travel time: 6 hours).
Wadduwa is a small yet bustling town which is found along the west coast of Sri Lanka and is well known for its iconic Gangatilaka Viharaya, one of the few Buddhist monuments that permit entry and a true highlight worth visiting. Markets and small shops along with a few modern establishments make up this seaside town and it’s always a fascinating sight to watch the locals trade various goods from coconut fibre products to fresh fish and vegetables. Kalutara’s golden beaches are fringed by magnificent palms and it is also excellent for swimming and working on your tan.
