Explore Sri Lanka's first capital and undoubtedly the grandest city of ancient Sri Lanka...home to two World Heritage sites! The central feature of the park is the ancient Minneriya Tank which was built in 3 rd century AD by King Mahasena. This tank is an incredible place to observe the elephants who come to bathe and graze, as well as the huge flocks of birds (cormorants and painted storks to name a few) that come to fish in the shallow waters. Afterwards, proceed to Dambulla (approx. travel time: 35 minutes).

These five caves are home to hundreds of Buddha statues, as well as frescoes, which cover about 1,800 square meters, depicting effigies or episodes of Buddha's life.
Afterwards, you will continue to Matale (approx. travel time: 1 hour) and visit a spice garden in Matale at the gateway to the old capital of Kandy.
