Beruwala —
Beruwala, nestled along Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast, is where golden sands meet the rhythmic calm of the Indian Ocean. Often described as the gateway to the island’s sun-drenched beaches, this serene resort town blends tropical tranquillity with centuries of cultural heritage. Palm-fringed shores, fishing boats painted in vivid hues, and warm ocean breezes set the scene for pure relaxation, while nearby temples and spice gardens invite discovery beyond the sea.
Must-sees:
- Beruwala Beach: A long, golden stretch of soft sand ideal for swimming, sunbathing or peaceful evening walks along the shoreline.
- Kechimalai Mosque: One of Sri Lanka’s oldest mosques, perched on a rocky promontory offering sweeping ocean views and a glimpse of Beruwala’s Islamic heritage.
- Brief Garden: Designed by Bevis Bawa, this enchanting tropical estate blends art, sculpture and nature in perfect harmony - a hidden gem for garden lovers.
- Lighthouse Island: Take a short boat ride to Barberyn Island to visit its historic lighthouse surrounded by lush palms and turquoise waters.
Culinary culture:
Beruwala’s cuisine captures the essence of Sri Lanka - fragrant, colourful and bursting with spice. Savour freshly grilled seafood straight from the bay, aromatic coconut curries, and the island’s signature rice and curry platters with lentils, sambols and crispy poppadoms. Don’t miss hoppers, a bowl-shaped pancakes often topped with egg and chilli or a refreshing glass of king coconut water. For dessert, indulge in Wattalappam, a creamy spiced custard made with jaggery and cardamom.
Dive deeper:
Beyond the beach, Beruwala offers a window into Sri Lankan life and landscape. Explore nearby Bentota, famous for water sports and river safaris through mangrove lagoons, or visit the Ambalangoda Mask Museum to discover the island’s vibrant folk traditions. Inland, spice plantations reveal the scents of cinnamon, clove and pepper that shaped Sri Lanka’s history. End the day with an Ayurvedic massage or sunset yoga session as the sound of the waves fades into evening.
Good to know:
Beruwala is around 90 minutes by car from Colombo International Airport via the Southern Expressway. The best time to visit is from November to April, when the sea is calm and skies are clear. The local currency is the SriLankan rupee (LKR), and English is widely spoken in hotels and restaurants.
