Your Destinations

Depending on your chosen itinerary you will discover a selection of the following destinations.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong is neon lights, endless shopping opportunities from street markets to high-end malls, and an unbelievably diverse array of skyscrapers, all designed with the essential input of the feng shui man. On Hong Kong Island they seem to sprout like weeds, built on landfill because of the lack of level real estate. Look down it all from The Peak, with spectacular views over the city, harbor, and mountains beyond. And do save time for a delicious Dim Sum breakfast or lunch, a mouthwatering selection of savory snacks served in bamboo baskets, and washed down with Chinese tea.
Hanoi
Thousands of limestone karsts and islets are sprinkled across this exquisite emerald green bay, protrusions in fantastical shapes, many with whimsical names. Spend a relaxing day exploring by sailing junk, and stop to visit one of the caves adorned in stalagmites and stalactites. Or travel to the capital city of Hanoi, with its French colonial architecture, a Temple of Literature dedicated to Confucius, a simple old cottage that belonged to Ho Chi Minh, and the lively and fascinating old quarter of 36 Streets, developed long ago in a type of guild system, with each lane named after the wares that were traditionally sold there.
Hue
Hue was the seat of power of the Nguyen dynasty—feudal lords of much of Vietnam in the 17th to 19th centuries. Here they built a forbidden city, designed along the lines of the one in Beijing, with a fortified citadel and monumental entry gates. In contrast is the charming small town of Hoi An, its old quarter filled with two-story shop houses, their elaborately carved wooden facades and tile roofs reminders of a once flourishing international marketplace. Da Nang is also a take off point for visits to countryside villages, surrounded by the brilliant green of rice fields, and best reached by bicycle.
Ho Chi Minh
This city, still familiarly referred to as Saigon by many, has an infectious energy all its own. You can feel the buzz generated by the mass of motorbikes and scooters that have all but replaced the traditional cycle rickshaw called a cyclo, and in nightclubs with names like Apocalypse Now that don’t really get hopping until midnight. French colonial architecture mixes with modern and Asian influences, and many fine old houses have become trendy restaurants serving up fine Vietnamese cuisine. One or two of the colorful pagodas, heavy with the scent of incense burned to bring good fortune, and the huge Ben Thanh market, crammed with everything under the sun, are definitely worth a visit.
Singapore
Chinese, Malay, and Indian traditions meld in this island-state at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The site of the world's busiest port, Singapore offers the Mustafa Centre, a 24-hour mall and Sunte, the world's largest fountain. Play evening golf on lighted fairways; experience the nightlife on Mohamed Sultan Road; or relax at an outdoor spa. Be certain not to miss the savory seafood.
Semerang
This commercial port, busily exporting the island’s most important products (including of course the beans for your next cup of java), is your gateway to two amazing religious sites. Borobudur is the largest Buddhist monument in the world—a 3D mandala (diagram of the universe), and perhaps a gigantic textbook to guide mortals striving to attain enlightenment. Prambanan is a complex of lofty, sharply sculpted towers honoring the Hindu triumvirate of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer. Both religions traveled this way with Indian traders in the early centuries AD.
Celukan Bawang
In spite of it being the main cargo port of northern Bali, Celukan Bawang is a relatively quiet town located in the middle of a beautiful bay. It’s an ideal place to soak in the sun and relax, yet still be conveniently situated near some of the island’s more lively destinations. Of course, being Bali, the beaches here are gorgeous, particularly the black sand stretches of Lovina and the nearby surf mecca of Kuta. For more land-based pursuits, Celukan Bawang offers great shopping and an array of restaurants that specialize in Balinese cuisine, considered one of the most complex cuisines in the world and featuring an amazing variety of spices combined with fresh seafood, meat, and vegetables.
Komodo
“Here be dragons”, the motto emblazoned on maps of old to designate lands and seas unknown, is in this case correct. The Komodo dragon is the world’s largest living lizard, and can be found only within Komodo National Park, of which this island is a part. A monitor lizard, it can reach a length of 10 feet, weigh more than 150 pounds, and live for over 50 years. Komodo also has a particularly rich marine life, with some 200 of species of reef building corals, hundreds of varieties of tropical fish, and whales, dolphins, and sea turtles too.
Lombok
While little is known of this Indonesian island prior to the 17th century, the tropical paradise of Lombok is now famed among travelers as “an unspoiled Bali”, with lush forests, spectacular white-sand beaches, world-class surfing, waterfalls, and hiking trails through fields of rice and tobacco.
If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, though, there’s always Gunung Rinjani, Indonesia’s second highest volcano, where you’ll be rewarded at the summit with natural hot springs and a crater lake. Less arduous adventures include traditional Sasak massages (often available on Lombok’s Senggigi and Mangsit beaches), snorkeling and scuba diving, bike tours, and shopping for pearls, as Lombok is renowned as one as “one of the best pearl producers in the world.”
Bali
Bali is enchanting—a lush, verdant isle where rice terraces color every available acre with the brilliant green of young shoots, and volcanic peaks said to house the goIt is a deeply spiritual place, where artful offerings of flowers and incense are ever present, and on any given day at least one of the thousands of temples scattered around the island will be hosting a colorful festivalds tower above. . Culturally rich, each village has its own artistic specialty: music, dance, painting, and sculpture. The beaches are tempting, but if you want the real Bali, head for the hills. The Balinese occupy that middle ground, and demons reside in the sea.
