Your Destination

The centuries have been kind to the former capital of the Russian Empire – St Petersburg looks as grand today as when Peter the Great laid the foundation stones in 1703. From his cabin on Petrogradskaya Storona, the Russian emperor invited Europe's leading architects to fill the streets with extravagant palaces and elegant Baroque cathedrals. Today, the historic centre is preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with the grand palaces of the Romanovs at Peterhof, Pushkin and Pavlovsk.

The Majestic Boutique Hotel Deluxe 4* is the perfect place for exploring this stunning city - located in the historic area dubbed the 'golden triangle'. Just a 20-minute walk from the city's top sights such as the Hermitage Museum, you'll be engulfed in the unique culture of this city during your stay.

It was founded 300 years ago in 1703 by Peter the Great. 65 rivers and canals, spanned by 360 bridges, crisscross the city which is located on 42 islands. It is not incidental that St Petersburg is also called the Venice of the North.

Your Optional Excursions

The Hermitage is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The second-largest art museum in the world, it was founded in 1764 when Empress Catherine the Great acquired an impressive collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. The museum celebrates the anniversary of its founding each year on 7 December, Saint Catherine's Day. It has been open to the public since 1852.

Its collection consists of 3 million items. Some say, if you want to see everything in this museum, and stand in front of each object for a minute, it would take you about 6 months!

Pushkin with a Visit Catherine's Palace

Your Optional Excursions
A small town of Pushkin is located at 25 km south of St. Petersburg. Historically, the estate was called "Saarskaya Myza", but later, in 1724, when the Russian Empress Catherine I had ordered to built here a palace, and to lay a park, it was renamed to "Tsarskoe Selo" (Royal Village). The unique architectural ensemble of Pushkin is world known for its elegant palaces and pavilions, landscape parks and ponds. Many world famous and higly-talented russian architects, like Rastrelli, Rinaldi, Cameron, Zemtsov, Chevakinskiy, Neelov were invited to work here, and place their beautiful creations here.

Half day City Tour including St. Isaac's Cathedral

Your Optional Excursions
The Cathedral, designed by the French architect Montferrand, is one of the finest monuments of the XIXth century, the former principal cathedral of the Russian capital. The largest cathedral in the city is able to accommodate about 13000. A characteristic feature of its decoration is the combination of monumental sculpture, painting and mosaic to form an overall artistic unity of the great power. The interior is richly adorned with marble, malachite, lapis lasuli, and porphyry. Approximately 220 pounds of precious metal were used for gilding its magnificent golden dome. The series of documents, plans, engravings and models show the history of the cathedral’s construction.

Travel Advice

For the latest travel advice from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office including security and local laws, plus passport and visa information please click here.

Please note that the advice can change, and you should continue to check all advice until you travel.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to:
  • within 10km of the border with the Ukrainian Donetsk and Lugansk Oblasts
  • Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan and the districts of Budyonnovsky, Levokumsky, Neftekumsky, Stepnovsky and Kursky in Stavropol Krai

  • The FCO advise against all but essential travel to:

    • within 10km of the border with the Ukrainian Kharkiv Oblast
    • North Ossetia, Karachai-Cherkessia and Kabardino-Balkaria (including the Elbrus area)

    Entry Requirements

You must ensure you have a valid passport to travel on.

To enter Russia, you’ll need to get a visa before you travel. Make sure you allow enough time to get your visa. The Russian Embassy advised in March 2018 that it takes around 20 business days (4 weeks) to process most visa applications.

You will require a letter of invitation to support your visa application, which will be provided by our local supplier. To obtain the letters of invitation required, you will need to send the following information to the local tour company (details will be provided on your voucher).
    Last name
    First name
    Middle name
    The date of birth
    Passport number

Once you have received your letter of invitation, you will need to apply for a visa.

We would recommend visiting the following website as the visa application process provided by the Russian Nation Tourist Office.

    Standard Service – 7 working days - £115
    Express Service – 2 working days - £210
(prices correct at time of print, subject to change)

As part of the visa application process, all applicants based in the UK aged 12 or over will need to visit a visa application centre to submit biometric data (scanned fingerprints). These are located in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. The Russian government has also announced plans to introduce biometric fingerprinting for all foreign nationals, including British nationals when entering Russia. No dates have been confirmed for this.

On receiving your visa you should check the details carefully including the validity dates and passport number to make sure they are correct. Make sure you’re aware of the terms and conditions attached to your visa before you travel. You should adhere to the validity and conditions of your visa while you’re in Russia, as the authorities strictly enforce all visa and immigration laws.

    Immigration Cards

You must sign an immigration card every time you arrive in Russia. This will be given to you at passport control. The card is in 2 identical parts. One part will be retained by the Immigration Officer. You should keep the other part safe as you’ll need to submit this at passport control when you leave Russia. Should you lose it, your departure from Russia could be delayed. There are also many hotels and hostels that will not accept guests without an immigration card.

For information about important health advice and any vaccinations required please visit and

If vaccinations or other preventive measures are required, you will need to visit your health professional at least 8 weeks before your trip.

You can normally bring prescription and over the counter medication into Russia for personal use. However, if your medication contains narcotic or psychoactive substances (details available on the Rossiyskaya Gazeta website in Russian), you must carry a prescription in your name which has been translated into Russian and then notarised. Notarisation services in the UK are available from a Notary Public.

Please note that passport, visa and health requirements can change. It is every traveller’s responsibility to ensure they have a valid passport, any required visas, and all the necessary vaccinations/health requirements as well as adequate insurance.
