Your Destinations

St Petersburg

Often described as the Venice of the North, St Petersburg is a city defined by water. The mighty Neva River empties into the Gulf of Finland near the Fortress of Peter & Paul – the final resting place of the Tsars – and canals snake through the backstreets, passing stately townhouses. Explore this enchanting city and discover the many hidden treasures!

The centuries have been kind to the former capital of the Russian Empire – St Petersburg looks as grand today as when Peter the Great laid the foundation stones in 1703. From his cabin on Petrogradskaya Storona, the Russian emperor invited Europe's leading architects to fill the streets with extravagant palaces and elegant Baroque cathedrals. Today, the historic centre is preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with the grand palaces of the Romanovs at Peterhof, Pushkin and Pavlovsk.

The Lotte Hotel St Petersburg 5* is the perfect place to stay to explore the city's best sights - located in the centre of the city, you can really make the most of your time here.

Moscow

Moscow is an enigmatic city with a rich history and vibrant culture. Politics, science, history, architecture, and business all meet here in this Russian capital, bursting with life. In this fascinating city, the ancient and the modern exist side by side.

In addition to the famous sites of the Red Square, the Kremlin, and the imposing nine domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow boasts an emerging art and music scene, and plenty of galleries and cafes, full of Moscow's cultured crowd.

The dining scene is equally vivacious, with everything from elegant haute cuisine to family-friendly establishments.

Your Optional Excursions
Enjoy a half-day tour of St. Petersburg before witnessing the beauty of St. Isaac's Cathedral, designed by the French architect Montferrand. One of the finest monuments of the 19th century, this is the largest cathedral in the city, accommodating around 13,000 people. The combination of monumental sculpture, painting and mosaic form makes this a truly incredible sight to see. You can also see a series of documents, plans, engravings and models which show the history of the cathedral's construction.

Visit to Pushkin & Catherine's Palace

Your Optional Excursions
The small town of Pushkin is located around 25 kilometres south of St Petersburg. Historically, the estate was called 'Saarskaya Myza', but later, in 1724, when the Russian Empress Catherine the First ordered a palace and a park to be built here, it was renamed 'Tsarskoe Selo', meaning 'Royal Village'. The unique architectural ensemble of Pushkin is world-renowned for its elegant palaces and pavilions, and its landscaped parks and ponds. Many famous and highly-talented Russian architects were invited to work here, including Rastrelli, Rinaldi, Cameron, Zemtsov and Neelov.

Folk Show at Nikolaevsky Palace

Your Optional Excursions
The beautiful Nikolaevsky Palace is located right in the centre of St Petersburg, and is a true architectural masterpiece from the 19th century. It is now in the top 100 list of monuments preserved by the state. Here, right in the concert hall of this elegant palace, you will have the opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable 2-hour folk performance. During this show, you'll hear tuneful folk songs, watch dances from different Russian provinces and learn how to use items such as saws, wooden spoons and other traditional household items as musical instruments!

Walking Tour of Arbat & Metro Tour

Your Optional Excursions
Arbat is a pedestrianised street in the centre of Moscow, which was a favourite neighbourhood for Moscow's nobility and creative intelligentsia in the 19th century. Over the years, the street has become one of the most popular spots in the city, filled with dancers, street artists, shops, and cafés.

The Moscow Metro is considered one of the most beautiful public underground transport systems in the world. It is a real subterranean city, with marble, bronze and granite decór as well as some very modern stations.

Walking Tour to the Tretyakov Gallery

Your Optional Excursions
Founded in 1856 by the merchant Tretyakov, this collection of art originally consisted of works by Moscow and St Petersburg painters - Tretyakov's contemporaries. Travel Advice

For the latest travel advice from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office including security and local laws, plus passport and visa information please click here.

Please note that the advice can change, and you should continue to check all advice until you travel.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to:
  • within 10km of the border with the Ukrainian Donetsk and Lugansk Oblasts
  • Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan and the districts of Budyonnovsky, Levokumsky, Neftekumsky, Stepnovsky and Kursky in Stavropol Krai

  • The FCO advise against all but essential travel to:

    • within 10km of the border with the Ukrainian Kharkiv Oblast
    • North Ossetia, Karachai-Cherkessia and Kabardino-Balkaria (including the Elbrus area)

    Entry Requirements

You must ensure you have a valid passport to travel on.

To enter Russia, you’ll need to get a visa before you travel. Make sure you allow enough time to get your visa. The Russian Embassy advised in March 2018 that it takes around 20 business days (4 weeks) to process most visa applications.

You will require a letter of invitation to support your visa application, which will be provided by our local supplier. To obtain the letters of invitation required, you will need to send the following information to the local tour company (details will be provided on your voucher).
    Last name
    First name
    Middle name
    The date of birth
    Passport number
    Nationality
    Gender

Once you have received your letter of invitation, you will need to apply for a visa.

We would recommend visiting the following website as the visa application process provided by the Russian Nation Tourist Office.

    http://www.visitrussia.org.uk/visa/tourist-visa.php

    Standard Service – 7 working days - £115
    Express Service – 2 working days - £210
(prices correct at time of print, subject to change)

As part of the visa application process, all applicants based in the UK aged 12 or over will need to visit a visa application centre to submit biometric data (scanned fingerprints). These are located in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. The Russian government has also announced plans to introduce biometric fingerprinting for all foreign nationals, including British nationals when entering Russia. No dates have been confirmed for this.

On receiving your visa you should check the details carefully including the validity dates and passport number to make sure they are correct. Make sure you’re aware of the terms and conditions attached to your visa before you travel. You should adhere to the validity and conditions of your visa while you’re in Russia, as the authorities strictly enforce all visa and immigration laws.

    Immigration Cards

You must sign an immigration card every time you arrive in Russia. This will be given to you at passport control. The card is in 2 identical parts. One part will be retained by the Immigration Officer. You should keep the other part safe as you’ll need to submit this at passport control when you leave Russia. Should you lose it, your departure from Russia could be delayed. There are also many hotels and hostels that will not accept guests without an immigration card.

    Health

For information about important health advice and any vaccinations required please visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice and https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/countries

If vaccinations or other preventive measures are required, you will need to visit your health professional at least 8 weeks before your trip.

You can normally bring prescription and over the counter medication into Russia for personal use. However, if your medication contains narcotic or psychoactive substances (details available on the Rossiyskaya Gazeta website in Russian), you must carry a prescription in your name which has been translated into Russian and then notarised. Notarisation services in the UK are available from a Notary Public.

Please note that passport, visa and health requirements can change. It is every traveller’s responsibility to ensure they have a valid passport, any required visas, and all the necessary vaccinations/health requirements as well as adequate insurance.
