Lisbon, on the western edge of Europe where the land meets the Atlantic Ocean, has always attracted all nationalities due to the richness of its Portuguese Heritage. It is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries.
Lisbon offers all the delights you would expect of Portugal's star attraction, yet with half the fuss of other major capital cities. Gothic cathedrals, majestic monasteries and quaint museums are all part of the colourful cityscape, but the real delights of discovery lie in wandering the narrow lanes of Lisbon's lovely backstreets. Just outside Lisbon there is more to explore: the magical setting of Sintra, glorious beaches and traditional fishing villages.
Your Itinerary —
Upon arrival in Lisbon airport, pick up your car and proceed to the hotel. You will spend the night in Caldas da Rainha at the Sana Silver Coast Hotel 4* (or similar).
After breakfast in your hotel, visit Obidos. Once a fortified town, protected by its perimeter wall and flanked by small round towers and massive square bastions, this medieval town is an impressive sight to behold.
This beautiful town was given by King Denis to his beloved wife, Queen Isabella, in a tradition that was replicated by subsequent monarchs for many years to follow. While in Obidos, be sure to sample its unique and sweet cherry liquor “Ginja” or “Ginjinha”.
In the evening, drive back to Caldas da Rainha where you will spend the night.
After a sumptuous breakfast, this is the day to discover Portugal's capital city of Lisbon. Start with the monument of Marques de Pombal, discover the Avenida da Liberdade, and make your way to the historic Rossio Square in the Baixa. Then, visit the Chiado and Alfama, the famous old city of Lisbon. Here you will find Moorish architecture, narrow and winding streets, and fantastic views over the city.
Continue through Lisbon the the monumental Belém district with its Manueline Jeronimos Monastery, the Belém Tower and Monument. Be sure to stop at the Pasteis de Belém café for a cup of coffee.
Round off your afternoon in Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Sight. You will spend the night in Evora at the Evora Hotel 4* (or similar).
Recharge with breakfast and explore Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will see the cathedral, the Roman temple, and the Giraldo Square. Visit and try some of the best Portuguese wines at the Adega da Cartuxa Winery. You will spend the night in Evora.
After breakfast, drive to the fairytale village of Sintra and visit the Palacio da Pena and Quinta da Regaleira. While in Sintra, be sure to try the traditional sweet "Queijadas de Sintra".
After Sintra, head towards Estoril by way of the Coast Road. You will pass the Cabo da Roca, the Western-most point of Europe. Gaze out onto the Atlantic and enjoy the sights! You will spend the night in Estoril at Hotel Londres 4* (or similar).
Relax in the hotel or on the beach.
Day 7: Estoril - Lisbon Airport (28 km)
Drop your car at Lisbon airport and board your return flight back home. You will leave with lasting memories of an unforgettable experience.
