Your itinerary in detail —
Day 1-2: Panama City
Day 1: Arrival in Panama City
- Upon arrival at Tocumen International Airport, you'll be met by your driver, who will take you to your hotel in Panama City.
Day 2: Panama City Excursion
Day 3: Excursion to Guna San Blas or Guna Yala
- Start the day early, with pick up from your hotel between 5h30 and 6h00 am.
- You'll be accompanied to the Caribbean harbour of Carti to meet with your shared transfer (approximately 2.5-hours)*.
- Upon arrival in Carti, you'll be picked up by a skipper and board a boat to visit the nearby islands of San Blas (wind and weather conditions permitting).
- Visit some of the many islands of the San Blas and enjoy a relaxing time on the beach. Most of the islands are deserted and inhabited only by a small family that collects the entrance tax. Some islands have large sandy beaches, others are ideal for snorkelling, but all feel like miniature paradises.
- Admire the beautiful 'mola' (traditional patchwork) crafted by the women of San Blas, who spend several hours a day creating these colourful designs. It will be difficult to resist purchasing one, as a special souvenir of your trip.
- Enjoy lunch consisting of traditional ingredients such as rice, fish of the day with beans or salad.
- In the afternoon return to Carti where your off-road vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Panama City.
About San Blas: San Blas is an archipelago of more than 350 islands, of which only 49 are inhabited. They belong to an area on the Caribbean coast of Panama and are home to the indigenous Guna people. San Blas is part of the 'comarca' (autonomous territory) of the Guna - an ancient culture that never accepted the rule of the Spanish during the colonial period. This territory gained considerable autonomy from the Panamanian government in the 1930s.
Please note:
- The road to Carti crosses the central ridge of Panama towards the coast, amidst a spectacular landscape of mountains and rainforest. It is very winding, so be prepared if you suffer from motion sickness.
- Transfers to San Blas are carried out by the Gunas in shared 4x4 vehicles. Cars can carry up to 7 passengers and can sometimes be a little cramped, but it is the only overland means of transport to reach the most unique and spectacular places in the Caribbean.
- Entrance tax to the Kuna area is included (approx. $23 USD/person).
- Also included in the price: Boat trip, entrance fees, local guide, shared transport, Panamanian lunch.
Days 4-5: Excursion to the Agua Clara Locks, Fort San Lorenzo & end of tour
- Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before being picked up for the drive to the province of Colon, on the Caribbean side of Panama.
- Once in Colon, you'll head towards the impressive Atlantic Bridge and cross the canal to reach the small road leading to Fort San Lorenzo. This picturesque road leading to the ruins passes first through secondary vegetation and then dense forest. Howler monkeys are most often heard and seen, as are agoutis and coatimundis.
- Upon reaching the end of the road, you'll arrive at the impressive fort of San Lorenzo, which towers proudly above the River Chagres and the Caribbean Sea. This magnificent landscape that hasn't changed much since Bradley and his band of pirates reportedly took hold of the fort some 300 years ago.
- Take time to enjoy the breathtaking view of the thick rainforest stretching down to the Caribbean Sea and to visit the ruins.
- After passing through the canal, visit the Agua Clara Visitor Centre for a a breathtaking view. This vantage point is situated above the newly installed locks that have greatly improved the quality of the water and permit the huge 'Panamax' ships to pass through.
- Return to Panama City in the late afternoon.

Day 5: Departure from Panama City
- Enjoy a tasty breakfast at your hotel.
- You will be collected by a Spanish-speaking driver for your private transfer to your beach stay at Playa Bonita.
