Compact and walkable, it’s the perfect place to explore at your own pace, with countless attractions within easy reach.
Must-sees:
- Karl Johans Gate: Oslo’s bustling main street stretches from the Central Station to the Royal Palace, lined with shops, cafés, and historic landmarks. It's a great starting point for discovering the city's key attractions.
- The Royal Palace: Perched at the end of Karl Johans Gate, this 19th-century neoclassical palace is the official residence of Norway’s monarch. Catch the daily changing of the guard or stroll through the surrounding Palace Park.
- The National Theatre & Parliament (Stortinget): Located along Karl Johans Gate, these architectural icons reflect Oslo's cultural and political importance. The National Theatre hosts world-class performances, while Stortinget is the seat of Norway’s democracy.
- Aker Brygge & Tjuvholmen: Once an old shipyard, Aker Brygge has been transformed into a lively waterfront promenade brimming with restaurants, bars, and boutiques. Next door, Tjuvholmen is known for its contemporary art galleries, including the renowned Astrup Fearnley Museum, and a buzzing nightlife scene.
Culinary Culture:
Oslo’s food scene has evolved into one of the most exciting in Scandinavia. From traditional Norwegian fare like fårikål (lamb and cabbage stew) and rakfisk (fermented fish) to New Nordic cuisine and fresh seafood straight from the fjord, the capital satisfies every palate. Head to Mathallen Food Hall for local delicacies or dine al fresco by the water with views of Oslofjord.
Dive Deeper:
Culture lovers will enjoy the city’s wealth of museums, from the Vigeland Sculpture Park in Frogner to the newly built MUNCH Museum and National Museum. For a maritime touch, visit the Fram Museum and Viking Ship Museum, both offering fascinating insights into Norway’s seafaring past. Good to Know:
Oslo is an all-season destination. Summers are mild and ideal for exploring on foot or by bike, while winter brings cosy cafés and opportunities for skiing just outside the city. The Oslo Pass offers free access to museums and public transport. Norway uses the Norwegian krone, and while tipping isn’t mandatory, it’s appreciated in restaurants and taxis for good service.
