Entry Requirements
Passport validity requirements
Your passport must:
- have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive. Passports issued after 1 October 2018 are now valid for only 10 years, but for passports issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added if you renewed a passport early
- have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave
Contact the Norwegian Embassy in London if your passport does not meet both these requirements.
You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document, or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.
Checks at border control
Make sure you get your passport stamped.
If you’re a visitor, your passport must be stamped when you enter or leave the Schengen area (which includes Norway). Border guards will use passport stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for stays in the Schengen area. If your passport was not stamped, border guards will presume you have overstayed the visa-free limit.
If your passport was not stamped, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.
At Norwegian border control, you may also need to:
- show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address for a second home
- show proof of your travel insurance
- show a return or onward ticket
- prove that you have enough money for your stay – the amount varies depending on your accommodation
Svalbard
You’ll need your passport to travel to and enter the Svalbard archipelago.
Follow the safety advice of the Governor of Svalbard, including on how to protect yourself from polar bear attacks, the risks of glaciers, avalanches and other dangers outside the main town of Longyearbyen.
Health
For information about important health advice and any vaccinations required please visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice and https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/countries.
If vaccinations or other preventive measures are required, you will need to visit your health professional at least 8 weeks before your trip. In the event that you are referred to a medical facility for treatment, you should contact your insurance/medical assistance company immediately.
Please note that passport, visa and health requirements can change. It is every traveller’s responsibility to ensure they have a valid passport, any required visas, and all the necessary vaccinations/health requirements as well as adequate insurance.
Arctic travel
Nearly half of Norway is in the Arctic Circle, including some very remote areas of land and sea. Emergency medical assistance and search and rescue are limited in these areas. See Arctic travel safety advice.
Brexit
If you are travelling to the EU, the UK government recommends that you have six months left on your passport on the date of your arrival to an EU country. You should also check when your passport was renewed.
If you renewed a 10-year adult passport before it expired, extra months may have been added to your passport’s expiry date. These extra months over 10 years will not count towards the 6 months that must be remaining. The UK Government has published a website tool to check the validity of your passport under these rules: https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/check-a-passport
You can renew your passport online or by going to a Post Office with a Check and Send service: https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport/renew
If your passport does not meet the criteria for third-country nationals, you may be denied entry to any of the Schengen area countries.
Please visit https://www.gov.uk/guidance/passport-rules-for-travel-to-europe-after-brexit for further information.
