It was its last royal capital, between 1860 and 1885, during the Konbaung dynasty. It was then called the "city of jewels", for its renowned jade. It is now the administrative capital of the Mandalay region.

After a delicious breakfast, you will get the chance to take a scenic drive to Kalaw via the Mount Popa.
On the road, you will visit a small factory of sweets and palm alcohol. You will have the chance to taste some of their local handmade products. You will walk through these plantations of palm trees and you will see the farmers skillfully climb up the palm trees in order to harvest fruits.
You will then drive to Mount Popa, the flower mountain.
Mount Popa is an extinct volcano at 1,520 m above sea level. It became the spiritual home of the colourful ‘nat’ (pre-Buddhist). The main attraction is not the monastery of Mount Popa itself (with more than 800 steps under the sun, only a few tourists have the courage to climb up), it is the small museum devoted to the Nats.
But, if you have the courage to the mount your reward will be the superb view of the surrounding Burmese countryside!
Overnight at the Kalaw Hill Lodge.
High up in western Shan State, Kalaw is a former British hill station with a laid-back atmosphere, refreshing climate, and scenic views. Many of Kalaw’s original colonial-era buildings remain.
After your one night stay in Kalaw, you will set off for Pindaya. Pindaya is located at 1600 meters above sea level, at the foot of a lake surrounded by mountains.
Upon your arrival at Pindaya, you'll get to discover the production of the famous Shan paper and beautiful Burmese umbrellas at a local umbrella factory. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant then continue the day with a visit to the Pindaya Caves.
It is here where you will discover more than 8,000 Buddha images made of alabaster, teak, marble, brick and cement, gilded or painted white and some were carved from the rock. After this educational tour, transfer to a Nyaung Shwe jetty and take a private pirogue to reach your next hotel...
Overnight at either the Amata Garden Resort 4* or the Inle Princess Hotel 5*.
Day seven is all about enjoying a full day on the lake. Head off in the early morning, after breakfast, and head onboard your traditional motorized pirogue. You will pass through villages built on stilts over the lake, inhabited by the local Intha people.
You can observe the unique one-leg rowing of Intha People who live in bamboo stilt houses in the waters and visit one of Inle Lake’s most popular and picturesque sights, the famous five-day floating market.
Then, enjoy Nga Hpe Chaung Monastery, which houses dozens of Shan Buddha Images, but is more famous for its unique ‘jumping cats’ that jump through hoops in the air!
Overnight at either the Amata Garden Resort 4* or the Inle Princess Hotel 5*.
After breakfast, you will head to the Pa-Oh Indein village, located on the western shores of Inle Lake. Enjoy a walk through the village before climbing up the hill with foam-covered stairs. At the top, you will be greeted by a Buddha amidst many stupas and groves. From the summit, you will also be rewarded with magnificent views of the surroundings.
The religious complex of Indein is undoubtedly one of the most impressive sites of the shores of the lake. It is composed of hundreds of small stupas covered with mosses and greenery. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and return to your hotel for free time at your leisure.
