Kotor —
Welcome to Montenegro
Wedged between towering mountains and a mirror-still bay, Kotor is the jewel of Montenegro’s Adriatic coastline. Encased within medieval walls and crowned by a labyrinth of cobbled alleys, this UNESCO-listed town is a time capsule of Venetian grandeur, Orthodox heritage, and seafaring legacy. Whether you’re scaling the fortress for jaw-dropping views or getting lost in its history-soaked streets, Kotor’s charm is inescapable.
Don’t miss
- Climbing the 1350 steps to St. John’s Fortress for panoramic views over the Bay of Kotor.
- Strolling through the Old Town’s tangle of stone alleyways, where medieval churches, charming squares, and sunlit cafés await.
- Visiting the Maritime Museum to uncover Kotor’s proud naval past.
- Taking a boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks, a tiny island crowned by a picturesque church.
- Exploring the nearby village of Perast, a baroque beauty with stunning waterfront views.
Culinary culture
Kotor’s cuisine is a fusion of Mediterranean freshness and Balkan heartiness. Expect seafood plucked straight from the bay—grilled octopus, black risotto, or mussels in buzara sauce (a garlicky white wine broth). Njeguški pršut (dry-cured ham) and local cheeses are must-tries, best paired with a glass of Vranac, Montenegro’s rich red wine. Don’t skip the bakeries, where burek, a flaky pastry stuffed with meat or cheese, makes for the perfect snack.
Good to know
Montenegro uses the euro (€), though it’s not part of the EU. Summer brings crowds and cruise ships, while spring and autumn offer milder weather and fewer tourists. Kotor is best explored on foot, but taxis and buses connect nearby highlights like Perast and Budva.
