Your destinations —
Faafu Atoll
Remote, serene, and refreshingly under the radar, Faafu Atoll offers a rarer side of the Maldives—one defined by space, silence, and raw natural beauty. Located south-west of Malé and far less developed than many central atolls, Faafu is ideal for travellers seeking authentic island life, exceptional marine encounters, and a sense of true escape away from the busier resort hubs.
Must-sees / Must-do:
- Pristine house reefs: Faafu Atoll is renowned for its healthy coral formations, excellent visibility, and rich marine biodiversity right off the shore, making snorkelling effortlessly rewarding.
- Channel diving (Kandu dives): Dive sites such as Neregando Kandu and Miyaru Kandu are famous for encounters with reef sharks, eagle rays, and schools of tuna sweeping through the currents.
- Island hopping to local islands: Visit traditional islands like Feeali to experience everyday Maldivian life, fishing culture, and local craftsmanship.
- Sandbank picnics: With fewer resorts and boats, Faafu’s sandbanks feel blissfully untouched—perfect for private swims and castaway moments.
- Dolphin cruises: Calm outer atoll waters make sightings frequent, especially at sunset.
Culinary culture:
Expect fresh, honest flavours rooted in the sea. Local cuisine centres on reef fish, tuna, coconut, chilli, and lime, with dishes such as mas riha (fish curry) and freshly grilled seafood served simply, letting quality shine.
Dive deeper:
What truly sets Faafu apart is its low density of resorts and visitors. There’s more space on the reefs, fewer boats in the lagoons, and a deeper sense of connection to nature. Days unfold slowly—snorkelling straight from your villa, cycling around quiet islands, or watching the stars in near-total silence.
Good to know:
Faafu Atoll is reached via a domestic flight from Malé, followed by a speedboat transfer. Calm seas and warm waters make it suitable year-round. If you’re looking for a Maldives experience that feels intimate, peaceful, and genuinely unspoilt, Faafu Atoll stands beautifully apart.
